No untouchability in Uthapuram now

Uthapuram, which was synonyms with untouchability, has now emerged as
a symbol of eradication of this practice, said the Tamil Nadu
Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF).
The dalits of Uthapuram village in Madurai, where the wall of
'untouchability' was demolished in 2008, entered the Muthalamman
temple on Thursday after 22 years following an agreement with caste
Hindus, said TNUEF president P. Sampath.
This has given an impetus to dalits of the state who are being denied
basic rights, including the right to worship, Sampath said in a
statement issued here.
The agreement between the dalits and people of other communities,
which was reached on October 20 following the efforts of Madurai SP
Asra Garg, entailed dalits being allowed to worship in Muthalamman
temple and at Pupil's tree.
It also involved the setting up of a busstand, withdrawal of cases
against each other and diversion of sewage that was being let into
dalit areas, he said.
Sampath said that the state government and the district administration
should fulfil the long-pending demands of dalits for undertaking
developmental work in the village. He recalled the various movements
by the front and the CPI(M) in support of Uthapuram dalits.
