Mayawati to woo 'Brahmins' before Assembly election; advocates
Dalit-Brahmins reservation
Lucknow, Mon, 14 Nov 2011 NI Wire

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo
Mayawati has begun her election campaign with the move to woo Brahmin
community for the upcoming assembly election schedule to next year.

The Brahmin community in Hindus constitute 12 per cent of the state's
overall population and basically considered as a traditional vote bank
of the Congress and the BJP.

To shift the thick vote bank, Mayawati has considerably played
'Dalit-Brahmin card', as she has advocated reservations for the poor
and unemployed upper castes.

Addressing to the public, at 'BSP Brahmin Society Fraternity Summit'
Mayawati said that despite upper castes remaining at the helm for
several years, most Brahmins remain economically backward and face
problems of poverty and unemployment.

Reiterating her earlier assurance, which was done in previous assembly
election, UP CM said that the upper caste would be given their due
representation in her ministry. For the forthcoming assembly election,
the BSP has given 104 tickets to Brahmins till now compared to the 13
by the Congress.

Targeting to her opposition parties, BSP supremo said, 'BJP is
projecting Rajnath Singh (kshatriya) as its next chief minister while
Congress is planning to promote Digvijay Singh (kshatriya), as the
next chief minister of state, if it wins.'

'The welfare of Brahmins is safe and secure only with the Bahujan
Samaj Party, as only BSP has given due respect to Brahmin samaj',
added Mayawati.

In 2007, the BSP gave tickets to 88 Brahmins out of which 42 were winners.

To avoid any annoyance of the other upper caste, she also appealed to
'kshatri' community to participate more in the party, as she said that
Bahujan Samaj party believes in equality and not against any caste in
particular.
