SP to hold meeting with Dalit leaders on their problems

seminar in Chitradurga on Wednesday.

Chitradurga: Superintendent of Police M.N. Nagaraj has said he will
convene a meeting of Dalit leaders to learn about their problems and
how to address them.

Speaking after inaugurating a seminar on 'Issues of Dalits' organised
by the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) here on Wednesday, he said the
Deputy Commissioner and the zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer
would also be invited to it.

Mr. Nagaraj said he had conducted similar meetings in other districts
during his stint there. He said he got valuable suggestions from Dalit
leaders on addressing problems of the community.


"I wish to get similar suggestions and response from the people here.
Based on the suggestions given by the leaders, the district police, in
association with other departments, will take suitable action," he

'Lack of awareness'

Stating that the Government was spending over Rs. 6,000 crore for the
welfare of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the State, Mr.
Nagaraj said that surprisingly many from these communities were not
aware of the schemes. "In order to spread awareness about them, I have
asked officials of various departments to prepare handbills for
distribution among the people," he said.

Zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Range Gowda said the zilla
panchayat had spent Rs. 80 crore under the Mahatma Gandhi National
Rural Employment Guarantee Act for the welfare of SC/STs, and added
that more funds would be spent this year. He said:
