Community radio service to be launched for Mahadalits
 PTI | 09:04 PM,Apr 17,2011

Patna, Apr 17 (PTI) Community radio service will be launched in Bihar
to spread awareness among Mahadalits so that they could avail benefits
of various schemes meant for their uplift, state SC/ST Welfare
Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi said. The Mahadalits are unaware of
development and welfare schemes in operation in Bihar, like MNREGA and
Indira Awas Yojana which aim to improve their lot as well as that of
the dalits, he told PTI here. The community radio service would be
launched on experimental basis to create awareness among the
Mahadalits of their rights besides the schemes and the state
government would spend Rs 2 crore on the community radio programme
during this fiscal. The community radio service is part of the
Mahadalit Mission programme for alleviation of the weakest sections
and the downtrodden and the awareness campaign was the thrust of Chief
Minister's Jeevan Dristi Yojana, the minister said. The state
government will spend Rs 98 crore for development and honing of the
skills of Mahadalits in 2011-12 in addition to Rs 400 coupons to be
given to each people of this section to purchase radios to listen to
programmes meant for them, Manjhi said. The coupon system has replaced
the earlier scheme in which the intended beneficiaries were being
given cash to buy radios. The earlier scheme was withdrawn when it was
found during monitoring that the beneficiaries were using the amount
on other heads and some were using the public money to fund their drug
habits, the minister said. Manjhi said agencies implementing the
community radio service will tie up with manufacturers. Radios would
be distributed during a camp to those registered with the concerned
 department and carrying coupons.
