Ambedkar birth anniversary celebrated

VIJAYAWADA: Marking the 121st birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar,
people here celebrated it in a grand manner on Thursday. Functions and
programmes were organised at various places, including offices of
political parties, government offices, and schools.

The leaders of political parties and voluntary associations made a
beeline for the Ambekar's statue near Tummalapalli Kshetrayya
Kalakshetram here. The garlanding was so heavy that Ambedkar's statue
was completely covered with flowers.

The leaders of Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and YSR Congress vied with each
other to garland the statue. The organisers decorated the vicinity of
statue colourfully, while the voluntary associations and dalit wings
of various political parties assembled at the dawn near Tummalapalli
Kshetrayya Kalakshetram.

The MLC Jelli Wilson, Vijayawada (East) MLA Y. Ravi, City Congress
president Pyla Somi Naidu, former Mayors M.V. Ratna Bindu, Mallika
Begum, Tadi Sakuntala, BJP city vice president M. V. Rama Subbaiah and
others were present.

Apart from garlanding the statue, the Congress, TDP and the BJP
organised programmes at their party offices to remember the services
of Dr. Ambedkar. On the occasion, the speakers urged the generation
next to adopt the principles of Dr. B R Ambedkar, who spent his entire
life working for the welfare of the downtrodden.

Dalits, tribals, minorities, backward classes, SC/STs and others were
able to fight for their rights today only due to the Constitution
drafted by Dr. Ambedkar, they opined.

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) organised the celebrations
in a betting manner, and presented Ambedkar puraskar to people in
recognition of their services to dalits. The awards were given away to
Dr. K. Ashok Surya, P. Umamaheswara Rao, Matta Jhansi, P. Ambedkar,
Ch. Venkatratnam and others.

The Corporation also gave away Ambedkar Scholarships to meritorious
students studying in 6th to 9th standards in VMC managed schools. A
cash award of Rs.1,000 was presented to 300 students.

Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal, Vijayawada (Central) Malladi
Vishnu, Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu and others were present.

'A visionary'

GUNTUR: Rice tributes were paid to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar here on Thursday.
In the official programme held at Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandiram,
Rural Development Minister Dokka Manikya Vara Prasada Rao said
Ambedkar had not only highlighted various problems confronted by the
nation, but also showed effective solutions to them.

The Constitution authored by him was a major contributor to
strengthening of democracy.

District Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu said Ambedkar gave vision and
direction to the country, for which people should be indebted to him.

Members of Legislative Council Singam Basavapunnaiah, K.S. Lakshman
Rao, Guntur West MLA Sk. Mastan Vali and others lauded the efforts
made by Dr. Ambedkar for uplift of the downtrodden sections of
