[ZESTCaste] Ex-bishop of Delhi keen to unite Dalits

Ex-bishop of Delhi keen to unite Dalits
Yudhvir Rana, TNN, Feb 27, 2011, 07.52am IST

AMRITSAR: Former Bishop of Delhi Diocese, Church of North India, Karam
Masih is on a whirlwind tour of the state to meet Christians, Majhbi
and Balmiki leaders, with an aim to bring them under the banner of
Saravjan Samaj Party. The Christian leader wants to initiate a
"movement for the uplift of Dalit and poor in the society".

"It is the poor, scheduled castes and backward classes, besides
Christians, on whose votes major political parties come to power, only
to forget them later," rued Masih, while talking to TOI on Saturday.
He was here as a part of his tour to Punjab, a state, which has a
significant number of people from SC and BC communities, who have
embraced Christianity. The former Bishop also held meetings with
various Balmiki and Majhbi leaders.

He said, "We all share same roots, our branches are different and if
we unite, we will be in a position to tilt the balance of power." To
buttress his claim, he said, according to a survey conducted by his
party, the graph of Dalits' support to both the major political
parties in the state had considerably gone down and it was high time
to amass the Dalit strength in order to give a tough political fight.

"But at the same time, there are certain elements that don't want
various groups of Dalits to join hands and are now jeopardizing our
programme," he alleged.
