SC and ST Comission to organise awareness camps for dalits in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, Dec 20 : The National Commission for Schedule Caste and
Schedule Tribes (NCSCST), in its maiden endeavour which is sure to
pose discomfiture to Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, will hold a
two month long awareness camp in the state to make dalits aware about
their rights.

These awareness camps, for the first time in the nistory of
Commission, will be held in all the 17 divisions in the state starting
from Gorakhpur on December 23.

The drive would end on februrary 23 from Lucknow division when a
similar camp would be held in Sitapur.

This awareness camps of the commission on dalit issues in the state
could start another round of 'political battle' between UP Chief
Minister Mayawati and the Chairman of the Commission P L Punia, a
former bureaucrat and long time aide of the former before joining the

SC/ST Commission Chairman and Congress Lok Sabha member from Barabanki
P L Punia said the main motive of these awareness camp would be to
educate the dalits about their rights given in the Constitution.

Talking to UNI from New Delhi over phone, Mr Punia said during these
camps, effort would be made to ask the dalits to monitor the
developmental works done in their areas under the Special Component

'' As the dalit atrocities in UP has touched a new high, now these
camps will try to ensure people fight about the rights and government
harrassement,'' he said.

Mr Punia said the commission had already fixed dates of these camps in
all the 17 divisions in the state as such drive would also be taken up
in other states of the country.

The Mayawati government and the SC/ST Commission have been at the
loggerheads from the day one after Mr Punia took the charge of the
chairman on October 15 last.
