''Dalits beaten, fined for drinking water from public outlet''

Lucknow, Oct 16 (PTI) BSP's Uttar Pradesh unit president Swami Prasad
Maurya today alleged that in a recent incident some Dalits had been
fined by the village panchayat and later beaten up for drinking water
from a public water outlet in Randhesar village in Rajasthan's Bikaner
district. "The panchayat imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 on three persons
belonging to Scheduled Castes for drinking water from a public water
outlet. They were first badly abused and thereafter fined," Maurya
said."When they asked when the fine would be waived off, they were
severely beaten up," he said. Maurya alleged that the National
Scheduled Castes Commission has turned a blind eye over the incident
of harassment of Dalits in Congress-ruled states. "It was ridiculous
that in the context of Uttar Pradesh the newly-appointed Chairman of
the National Scheduled Castes Commission, P L Punia, was able to see
misuse of SCP amount and pointed out that the interests of Dalits were
being ignored, but when it came to the Congress ruled states he was
unable to see any folly," Maurya said.
