CM slams Marxists over dalit row

July 16th, 2010

DC Correspondent

Dalit row, Karunanidhi July 15: Chief minister M. Karunanidhi on
Thursday continued his tirade against CPI(M) for the second
consecutive day stating that the Marxist party was deliberately raking
up the Uthapuram and Chidambaram Nataraj temple issues to bring
disrepute and create problems to the DMK government.

Speaking at the 107th birth anniversary of former chief minister K.
Kamaraj here, Mr Karunanidhi said the CPI (M) was organising an
agitation to demand that the path to the temple in Chidambaram said to
have been used by Nandanar, a dalit devotee, should be thrown open.
"The agitation is not for Nandanar but to create an obstacle to the
execution of good schemes," he said.

On the Uthapuram caste wall issue, he recalled how the wall, which
separated a dalit colony from caste Hindus for years in Uthapuram
village of Madurai district, was demolished two years ago on his
instruction. Caste Hindus, who were initially upset over the move,
were later mollified and the issue was sorted out, Mr Karunanidhi
added.

Recalling the recent CPI (M) agitation on the matter, he said for some
parties, if any issue had been resolved, they would become irrelevant.
"This was why they are instigating the people in the area," he said
adding such instigations occurred even during the Kamaraj rule. The
chief minister called for unity among people and warned against caste
coming in the way of national development.

Recalling the successful conduct of panchayat elections in Keeripatti,
Pappapatti, Nattarmangalam and Kottakanchiyendal villages, where dalit
presidents were elected after several ears, Mr Karunanidhi said the
DMK, as an anti-caste party, was committed to eradication of
untouchability.
