13 houses of Dalits attacked

SALEM: Thirteen houses of the Adi Dravidar Colony suffered minor
damage and a temple car was found partially burnt in Tholasampatti
village of Omlaur block near here on Tuesday. Nobody was injured.
Simmering differences had surfaced between caste Hindus and Dalits
when the village celebrated the annual three-day car festival of the
Sri Aboorvamaya Perumal temple, which concluded on Sunday. The Dalits
alleged that they were not permitted to take part in the festival, a
claim the caste Hindus refuted. This prompted a group of Dalits to
enter the 'poromboke' land on which the temple car is stationed, to
construct a temple. The caste Hindus protested and a wordy quarrel
ensued. Village elders intervened and pacified both the groups.
On Tuesday morning, the temple car was found partially burnt. Blaming
it on the Dalits, a group of caste Hindus reportedly entered the Adi
Dravidar colony and threw stones at the houses. Tiles, windowpanes and
household articles were damaged. Protesting against the attack and
demanding compensation, the Dalits staged a demonstration in front of
the office of the Omalur Tahsildar.
