Fact-finding team seeks high level probe
COIMBATORE: Dalits continue to be the target of attack in different
forms from different sides. Here, a Dalit youth had to face the
onslaught of police personnel, who thrashed him at Mahalingapuram
police station in Pollachi causing injuries to him.
Detailing the sequence of events to `Express', A Kathir, executive
director of Madurai-based Evidence, an NGO championing the cause of
Dalits, said Rajamanickam (24), a painter by profession, was returning
home along with his friend Vadivel after their daily chores. Near
Mahalingapuram, one of them accidentally touched a two-wheeler parked
on the roadside which fell to the ground. While Vadivelu was trying to
lift it, a group of people nearby assaulted him. Scared, Rajamanickam
started to flee. But, a beat constable caught him after giving him a
chase.
The youth was later taken to Mahalingapuram police station where he
was allegedly beaten up by four police personnel, including inspector
Pitchaimuthu, using lathis. They also took the finger prints of the
youth besides calling him by his caste name. Rajamanickam was let off
after some of his friends intervened. Later, he was admitted to the
Pollachi government hospital and later to the Coimbatore Medical
College Hospital CMCH and then discharged.
Meanwhile, a fact-finding team from Evidence came to Pollachi and
conducted a study of the whole episode. Petitions were sent to
Director General of Police, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and
District SP seeking action against the police personnel for their
violent act.
Following this, Mahalingapuram woman SI registered a case under
Section 323 IPC and Prevention of SC/ST Atrocities Act,1989 vide
Sections 3110 against four police personnel including the inspector.
However, the police filed a counter FIR against the victim under
non-bailable sections.
In its findings, the team wanted an high-ranking police official from
another district to conduct a detailed probe instead of Pollachi DSP,
who is now enquiring into the incident.
