DALIT GIRL'S MURDER IN HARYANA

CPI(M) Lambasts Police Apathy

THROUGH a statement issued from Rohtak on May 11, the Haryana state
committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed deep
anguish over the failure of the police to apprehend the culprits who
had in the preceding week perpetrated the most heinous crime of
abduction, rape and murder of a school girl in Kurukshetra. Through
this press statement the party's state secretariat said that ordinary
citizens of the state were compelled to live in utmost fear in the
wake of an unprecedented spurt in crime all over the Haryana,
especially during the recent months.

The party has cited that display of mass protest in Kurukshetra
against this gruesome murder of a dalit school girl was enough
testimony to the anger brewing among the common people against the
callous attitude of the police in general and in this case in
particular. The CPI(M) has asked the chief minister, who is in charge
of the home department also, to come out with effective steps to
restore the sense of security among the common people.

The CPI(M) has stated that women in general and the women of dalit and
other weaker sections in particular are bearing the brunt of worst
sexual assaults and other form of violence. The state units of the
CPI(M) and CPI have resolved the work for contacting political
parties, mass organisations, social groups and general public towards
forging a wider platform in order to launch an effective mass campaign
for security of life and property of the common people.

[ZESTCaste] A voluminous dossier on Dalit writing

http://www.hindu.com/2011/05/09/stories/2011050959270200.htm

Kerala - Kochi

A voluminous dossier on Dalit writing

Special Correspondent

The cover of the book 'No Alphabet in sight'

Kochi: Nothing other than the words of Poykayil Appachan would form a
fitting title for the first dossier of Dalit writing in Tamil and
Malayalam brought out as part of a project on new Dalit writing in
South India: 'No Alphabet in Sight' ( Kanunneeloraksharavum in
Malayalam).

The voluminous dossier, edited by acclaimed scholars K. Satyanarayana
and Susie Tharu, both faculty members at the Department of Cultural
Studies of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFL-U),
Hyderabad, was released at a function here recently.

Speaking at the book launch, Mr. Satyanarayana, also an activist and
Telugu litterateur, said there was a dearth of critical writing on
Dalit thinking in English in the country, especially in the South.

"For instance, there is a vibrant Dalit movement in Telugu, but it is
not documented in English," he said, citing the reasons for embarking
upon the project.

Talking of the anthology featuring prominent Dalit writers in
Malayalam and Tamil, Mr. Satyanarayana said their works provided an
alternative point of view, just as the way most of these writers lived
their lives.

"Most of them live in difficult conditions, but they have taken up the
serious task of investing in the cultural domain," he said.

Ms. Tharu, in her address, said that so far, it had been a small group
that had dominated social science studies.

"There has been no methodological inventiveness, no passion or drive,
leave alone richness in mainstream sociological discourses for long.

The non-canonical writers, on the contrary come up with completely
different, often shocking, articulation of issues. It is like the
elephant telling the story of the blind men," she said.

Ms. Tharu, however, cautioned that the volume was far from the
beginning of the formulation of an ideology. "It is an offering with
which different people will do different things," she hoped.

The book was released by Ravi Deecee of DC Books. T. Muralidharan
accepted the first copy.

Earlier, the function began on a colourful note with Pradeepan
Pambirikkunu's moving rendition of Poykayil Appachan's popular song, '
Kanunneeloraksharavum…'

[ZESTCaste] Hazare's aides following anti-Dalit agenda under influence: Mayawati

http://www.newkerala.com/news/world/fullnews-208540.html

Hazare's aides following anti-Dalit agenda under influence: Mayawati

mayawati-1 Lucknow, May 13 : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati
today launched an attack on the initiative of social activist Anna
Hazare saying his team was functioning under the influence of other
political parties and alleged his anti-corruption movement had
'anti-Dalit' undertones.

"I welcome the anti-corruption drive initiated by Anna Hazare, but the
fact remains that he and his team are playing in the hands of
political outfits," the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party president here
alleged while addressing a function on the occasion of fourth
anniversay of her government in the state.

Alleging that his anti-corruption initiative launched from Uttar
Pradesh had some political interest behind it, she said "there have
been a number of scams in Anna's home state of Maharashtra, but to
start the movement from UP raises doubt over the intentions." Ms
Mayawati did not mince words while commenting that the associates of
Mr Hazare and the entire civil society were following anti-dalit
agenda on the behest of other political forces.

The BSP supremo warned the civil society that she may organise
country-wide public meetings to unveil the double standards adopted by
its members.

Dear Friends,

I apologise I could not write to you all yesterday.

The commitments received so far are as follows:
Already collected here                                 10,000
Shiva Shankaran (Usha+Arul+Ananth)           10,000
Chittibabu Padavala                                     10,000
Sharmila Rege                                            10,000
Narayanan                                                  30,000 around July 16
Rama                                                         4,000
Nagaraju Koppula                                        2000
Hadke                                                        Unspecified
Vageesh                                                     Unspecified
--------------------------------------------------------
Total                              76000 +
---------------------------------------------------------

I suggest that we do this in two or three steps.

1) Let us  first take in the contributions from Chittibabu, Shiva Sankaran and Sharmila Rege (adding up to 30,000) right away. All these can probably be done through a net transaction. I will provide the bank details below. Just in case there is any difficulty with doing an online transaction, you can mail the cheque or draft to my address which is also given below. I can deliver it to Prabhavita. That covers 40,000 (including the 10000 we have already given her from here) of the 50K that is requested.

Account holders name: Prabhavitha

Account No. : 62082883931

Bank: State Bank of Hyderabad

Medchal Branch (Branch code 20091)

IFSC code SBHY0020524
MIRC code 500004070

(For those of you who are not familiar with the region, 'Medchal' is in Ranga Reddy district, which is the outskirts of Hyderabad.)

Please let me know when you send the cheque or do the net transaction so I can keep track of the transfer. It will be great if we can wrap this up by coming Wednesday - counting for delays in bank transactions etc.

If you want to mail a cheque or draft please make it out in Prabhabitha's name and courier it to my my mailing address

2) I am meeting with Prabhavitha and her father tomorrow. I want to make sure that they have not underestimated the expenditure because they were just too embarrassed to ask even for this money. I am going to ask a friend to help with any shopping that Prabhavitha may need to do. I will update you all on how that goes. And then we can take in the other contributions - Rama, Hadke, Vageesh and Nagaraju in that order.

3) In July we can get in whatever remains to be covered when Dr. Narayanan returns to India.

I must say that when I posted that note on facebook, I was just not prepared for this kind of response. I just thought it is important for people to become aware of life trajectories such as that of Prabhavita and her father. It is hard to explain this, but if any of you is interested there is an English translation of a Telugu short story by Allam Rajaiah (Manishilopali Vidhwamsam) titled Desolation within (translate by K balagopal)
It is in this book here

Prabhavitha's family comes from the social and geographical context captured in that gut wrenching and landmark short story written a couple of years before Prabhavitha's father surrendered.

Money is important and needed, but I thought we would just have to figure out locally how to meet these needs. But after seeing this response, I am wondering if we can organise some sort of a roster of commitments and a designated bank account maintained by one person to whom requests can be directed. I can think of several workable models for something like that. If the idea makes sense we can think about the details.
