Ahmedabad: The vice-chancellor of Gujarat University, Parimal Trivedi,
may find himself in trouble in a three-year-old atrocity case. The
SC/ST cell of the city police has summoned him to remain present
before it on January 23. The police have also warned him that he would
be arrested if he fails to appear before the competent officer of the
SC/ST cell.

Trivedi is facing investigation in a case in which he is accused of
making abusive remarks regarding caste against Professor Pankaj

A complaint was lodged with the Gujarat University police station on
May 3, 2008 under the Prevention of Atrocities Act. But the police are
yet to take necessary action in the matter.

The police issued summons to the vice-chancellor on Thursday after the
Gujarat high court directed them to conclude the investigation in the
case within 15 days. The court had directed the police to conclude the
hearing over a petition filed by Shrimali who had sought completion of
the investigation against Trivedi.

"The court has asked the police to conclude the investigation and file
a charge-sheet against Trivedi within 15 days," said Shrimali while
talking to media-persons.

Gujarat University Prof Pradip Prajapati and his colleague, Pankaj
Shrimali, are at loggerheads with Primal Trivedi on several issues.
Prajapati has also been suspended by Trivedi.

Shrimali, who appeared in the court in person, told media persons that
he had told the court that the police had not concluded the
investigation and had shown lack of sensitivity, though sufficient
time had passed since the incident.

Trivedi had earlier approached the high court to get the complaint
against him quashed but he could not succeed. The police had started
investigations after that.
