Mayawati has no sense of humour: Meghnad Desai

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has fresh troubles of his own. But,
not too long ago, Uttar Pradesh chief minister had decreed that he be
sent to a mental asylum after the alleged leak of sensitive documents.
Was this high-handed remark justified? Says author, politician and
academic Meghnad Desai, "Describing your critics as 'pagal' has always
been the reaction of the Nawabi culture which infects our democracy.
Mayawati's remarks show her ignorance of Julina Assange's role in
Wikileaks and also her intolerance of any criticism. She also has no
sense of humour."
He adds, "On the broader question, the idea that mad people should be
locked up in some asylum relects the view that once locked up they can
be forgotten. It is to classify 'mad' people as sub-human. The Indian
attitude towards disability and any deviation from 'normal' is a very
intolerant one and medically ignorant. Maybe Mayawati's remarks will
rouse the people to take up the issue of the rights of 'mad' people to
question being locked up in asylum."
