AN Indian couple have become the first in Britain to take legal action
for caste discrimination.
Law firm manager Vijay Begraj and his wife Amardeep, a solicitor
there, claim they lost their jobs because senior staff objected to
Vijay, 32, belonged to the Dalits - the lowest people in India's
ancient caste system and once called The Untouchables.
Amardeep, 33, from the high-society Jats, told a Birmingham employment
tribunal a boss asked her to call their wedding off.
She later quit after conditions at Coventry solicitors Heer Manak
allegedly got worse, while her husband was fired.
They claim unfair dismissal - Amardeep's constructively - and discrimination.
The hearing continues.
