Censor Board rejects dalit panel's demand to be shown 'Aarakshan' before release

NEW DELHI: Concerned that a film which addressed the controversial
issue of reservation for backward castes be sensitively handled, the
Censor Board had set up a five-member examining committee to preview
Prakash Jha film 'Aarakshan'. The Amitabh Bachchan-starrer hit
headlines last week when the National Commission for Scheduled Caste's
(NCSC) demanded that it be shown the film before it was released.

Sources said the Censor Board rejected the commission's demand, citing
that the Cinematography Act did not allow such action but relented by
setting up a committee with members from the backward community. The
committee cleared the film on Tuesday without any cuts, giving it a
 'Universal' certificate.

In a letter to the commission, Censor Board CEO Pankaja Thakur
explained that while CBFC appreciated the concerns of the NCSC, there
was no precedence of involving a statutory body in film certification.

In fact, director Prakash Jha said he was not required to respond to
any board of people who want to sit in judgment. "As a filmmaker who
has been making films for about 30 years, I am well aware of the
procedure I have to follow to get clearances for the release of the
film. I will be following the due procedure," Jha said in a statement.

The panel wants to make sure that the film has not misinterpreted the
constitutional provision for reservations in government jobs and
educational institutions for the socially backward classes.

The committee included Nandu S Bansode, Rajaram Tanawade, Jayashree
Kamble and Laishram Mema. Dalit activist Ragini Tilak and retired
Justice Mukul Mudgul were also asked to assist the committee.

The film is scheduled for release on August 12 and stars Bachchan,
Saif Ali Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Pratiek Babbar and Deepika Padukone.
