Bangalore: Police shielding accused, say Deepika's relatives

Bangalore, Mar 4 (The Hindu): The police are shielding the accused in
the Ramanagaram honour killing case, alleged relatives and friends of
Venkatesh, husband of K.R. Deepika, who was found murdered on February
27.

The main accused, Ramakrishnaiah, is a close supporter of a powerful
politician in the area, because of which the police are deliberately
delaying arresting the accused, they alleged.

They alleged that initially the Ramanagaram police refused to receive
the complaint from Mr. Venkatesh. On February 27, I submitted my
complaint at the Harohalli police station. Instead of registering a
First Information Report (FIR) the police issued an acknowledgement
slip, Mr. Venkatesh told The Hindu.

He quoted the police as saying that the murder did not occur in a
place under their jurisdiction. At 11 p.m. the same day Mr. Venkatesh
tried to file the complaint at the Channapatna town police station.

Even there, they refused to accept the complaint on grounds of
jurisdiction, he said. He then went to the Kanakapura rural police
station at 2 a.m. of February 28 and met head constable Govardhan who
too did not accept the complaint on the same ground, he alleged.

Later, I met S.B. Bisanahalli, Superintendent of Police, Ramanagaram.
He ordered the Kanakapura town police to register a FIR and
investigate, said Mr. Venkatesh.

Mr. Bisanahalli said: We have constituted a team to arrest the six
absconding accused booked for the honour' killing of Deepika and her
son. Investigation is on and we will make sure that justice is done in
this case.

But, Venkatesh's relatives are worried. The police are yet to gather
evidence from inside the unguarded, locked house of the accused, they
said.

The accused have locked the house and disappeared. Fingerprints,
footprints, hair and signs of struggle may be found inside the house
which will help the police, they claimed. But the police have made no
efforts to collect the clues, they alleged.

The police could have broken open the lock and entered the house to
collect evidence. One of the accused is a police head constable and he
knows the importance of evidence. Hence, there is a possibility that
the accused or their relatives may visit the house and destroy the
clues, a relative of Ms. Deepika, sympathetic to Mr. Venkatesh,
feared.

Deepika and her son were murdered in Thamasandra village near
Kallahalli in Kanakapura of Ramanagaram district. Relatives and
friends suspected that she was killed for marrying her neighbour R.
Venkatesh, who is from a lower caste, against her family's wishes.

Deepika's father Ramakrishnaiah, mother Gowramma, uncle K.V. Venkatesh
(a teacher at the Rural High School in Harohalli), his wife Padma,
grandfather Mooge Gowda and another uncle Channabeere Gowda (a police
head constable) are the accused.

Speed up probe'

The Ramanagaram district administration has now instructed the police
to take strict action in the matter and speed up the inquiry.

Mr. Bisanahalli, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Channapatna
sub-division) Siddappa, Kanakapura Town police inspector Manjunath and
sub-inspector Chandrappa visited Thamasandra and the spot where the
bodies were burnt. Two special teams have been formed.

The Kanakapura police sent the remains, which were collected on
Tuesday, to the Forensic Science Laboratory.
