Natl Commn for SC/ST visits village hit by communal clash
PTI – Fri, Feb 25, 2011 3:12 PM IST

Madurai, Feb 25 (PTI) Members of the National Commission for SC and ST
visited Paralipudur village in nearby Dindigul district in connection
with the communal clashes that took place there earlier this month.

The team, led by National Commission for SCs'' State Unit Director E
Dasarathan, spoke yesterday with dalit residents of the village whose
houses were allegedly set ablaze and ransacked by upper caste Hindus
on February 13.

District officials, including the police, explained to the commission
measures taken protect the dalits and ensure peace after the clashes.

They said the law and order situation in the village was being
monitored daily by the police and revenue officials, who had ensured
that normalcy is brought back.

The clash erupted following a dispute over the erection of flags of
dalit leader Thirumavalavan''s Viduthalai Chiruthiagal Katchi (VCK)
and the other caste.

Talking to reporters in Madurai, Commission member Latha Priyakumar
said the Commission had recommended setting up separate police
stations all over the country to deal with atrocities against dalits.

She said besides reviewing the prevailing situation in the district,
the Commission would also audit the accounts relating to spending of
funds earmarked for the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department
(ADTWD) in seven districts, including Dindigul.

Priyakumar criticised the ADTWD of Tamil Nadu for poor maintenance of
the Adi Dravidar hostels in the state and said the weekly food menu
was not maintained in almost all hostels, leading to malnutrition
among the inmates.

There was a suggestion to implement a course in spoken English for the
hostel inmates, she added.

Another suggestion to cancel the annual family income ceiling of Rs
24,000 to avail the assistance of Rs 2,500 towards funeral rites in
the case of death in SC/ST families and increase the amount to Rs
5,000 had also been forwarded to the state government, she said.
