Patna, Nov 10 (IANS) A Dalit man was beaten to death for plucking two brinjals (aka eggplant) from a field belonging to a landowner of a higher caste in a village in Bihar, police said Wednesday. To escape the clutches of law, the landowner later offered the grieving Dalit family Rs.75,000 and a piece of land. The family turned down the offer. Suresh Manjhi, a resident of Moresand village in Samastipur district, was caught Tuesday evening when Subodh Singh spotted him in his field. Manjhi's family members said that Singh then locked Manjhi in a room and thrashed him. 'He died soon after being thrown at our doorstep Tuesday night,' a family member told IANS. Subodh Singh later tried to persuade Manjhi's family not to approach the police, and offered them Rs.75,000 and a some land in return. 'But the family approached us, and lodged a complaint. We will take action soon,' a police officer said. |
