Ms Mayawati Ms Mayawati is now preparing for a run at the Rajya Sabha,
the upper house of parliament

India's controversial low-caste Dalit leader Mayawati has more than
doubled her wealth in the last five years.

In an affidavit she filed for a run at parliament's upper house, her
assets were valued at $22.35m (£14.2), making her one of India's
richest politicians.

Until last week, Ms Mayawati was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, one
of India's least-developed states.

She quit after her party's poor performance in the recent state
assembly elections.

In 2007, when she was elected chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, her
wealth was put at $10.42m.

She is now preparing to run for the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of
Indian parliament.

The information about her financial assets was revealed on Tuesday
when she filed her nomination papers in Lucknow, capital of Uttar
Pradesh.

Rajya Sabha MPs are elected by state legislative assembly members and
their term is for six years.

Voting is due to be held on 30 March.
Statues

Ms Mayawati's latest acquisition is a sprawling bungalow in Lucknow
which is valued at $3.14m.

She also owns jewellery and diamonds worth $193,583 and a revolver worth $108.

Ms Mayawati is a controversial politician who is famous for building
statues of herself and other figures from the Dalit community.

A large numbers of statues commissioned by Ms Mayawati can be seen in
Lucknow and elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh.

In September, leaked US diplomatic cables said Ms Mayawati had sent an
empty private jet to fetch a pair of sandals from Mumbai - a charge
she strongly denied.

She is an icon to millions of Dalits (formerly known as Untouchables),
most of whom are poor.

Mayawati to run for Indian parliament's upper house

India's low-caste Dalit icon Mayawati is preparing to run for the
Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament.

Ms Mayawati recently quit as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh state
after her party's poor showing in crucial assembly elections there.

She filed her nomination papers in the state capital, Lucknow. Voting
is due to be held on 30 March.

Rajya Sabha MPs are elected by state legislative assembly members and
their term is for six years.

Fifty-eight members to the 250-seat Rajya Sabha are up for election
across the country.
Controversial

Last week, Ms Mayawati resigned as the chief minister of India's most
populous state, saying the results did not favour her party.

The regional Samajwadi Party took 224 seats out of the 403 in Uttar
Pradesh's legislative assembly, while Ms Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj
Party was a distant second with 80 seats.

Ms Mayawati is a controversial politician who is famous for building
statues of herself and other figures from the Dalit community.

A large numbers of statues commissioned by Ms Mayawati can be seen in
Lucknow and other towns and cities of Uttar Pradesh.

In the run-up to the polls, the election commission ordered the
statues and symbols to be draped. They were unveiled once the polls
were completed on 3 March.

In September, leaked US diplomatic cables said Ms Mayawati had sent an
empty private jet to fetch a pair of sandals from Mumbai - a charge
she strongly denied.

Rape cases against SC and ST women increasing

New Delhi, March 13 (IANS) Incidences of rape of Scheduled Caste (SC)
and Scheduled Tribe (ST) women by non SC/STs has been increasing,
Minister of State for Home Jitendra Singh informed the Lok Sabha
Tuesday.

Citing data provided by National Crime records Bureau (NCRB), he said
in a written reply that in 2008, 2009 and 2010, a total of 1,457,
1,346 and 1,349 cases of rape of SC women by non-SCs and total of 585,
583 and 654 cases of rape of ST women by non-STs were registered in
the country.

Singh said the government attached the highest importance to the
prevention and control of crime against SCs/STs and women.

"Ministry of Home Affairs has sent detailed advisories dated April 1,
2010 and Sep 4, 2009 on crimes against SC/ST and women respectively to
all states and union territories," said Singh.

Task force to streamline schemes for SC/ST: Mukul Vasnik

Gulbarga, Karnataka Mar 10 : The UPA Government will streamline
schemes for upliftment of women belonging to scheduled castes and
scheduled tribes which will be reflected in the coming Union Budget,
Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik said today.

Speaking to media persons after inaugurating a girls hostel here, he
said the Centre aimed to set aside 20 per cent of the government
resources for the two communities.

The Minister regretted that the families in the downtrodden sections
have not been able to fully utilise the special schemes meant for the
girl child. 'We have so many schemes and it is time the parents from
these sections of the society fully support their daughters to get
empowered by getting educated and enter the mainstream,' he said.

He regretted that excepting for one or two sectors, women lagged
behind men in taking up better employment though they were fully
equipped to do so. (UNI)

WARANGAL: Deputy chief minister Damodar Rajanarasimha is sure that a
dalit leader from the Congress would become the chief minister of the
state soon.

Speaking to media persons at Kazipet on Tuesday, the deputy chief
minister said that dalit community has realized that the dream of a
dalit leader becoming CM is not far-off.

"That day will come soon and we are sure a dalit will sit in the chief
minister's chair," he said.

He also said that the community is struggling hard to empower
themselves in higher education and working their way up to realize
their dreams.

About Station Ghanpur by-elections, the deputy chief minister said
Congress candidate Rajarapu Pratap would win the seat with a bumper
majority.

Speaking at the Zaffargadh mandal election meeting, he appealed to the
voters to take into account the various welfare schemes implemented by
the Congress government.
