20 injured as two groups clash
Staff Reporter

A group of people resist DHRM's protest march

At least 20 persons, including four policemen, were injured when
police baton charged a mob which attacked Dalit Human Rights Movement
(DHRM) demonstrators at Thumpode in the Pallickal police station
limits on Monday. The violence started at 11.40 a.m. when 200 DHRM
activists, most of them from other parts of the district, assembled at
the Thumpode junction to stage a march towards the local police
station in protest against the arrest of their workers on the 'foisted
charge' of destroying crops of members of other communities.

They also demanded the police arrest those responsible for the recent
attack on the houses of two Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe families
in Madavoor village.

Soon, a large number of local people, cutting across political lines,
gathered at the junction to counter the DHRM protestors. They blocked
the 4-km road from Thumpode to Pallickal and prevented DHRM workers
from marching towards the police station.

The crowd started throwing stones at the DHRM activists who retaliated
in kind. Fourteen DHRM activists and an unknown number of local
residents were injured in the stone-throwing. The injured were
admitted to different hospitals in Attingal taluk.

A large police posse led by Deputy Superintend of Police, Attingal,
K.E. Baiju, separated the warring groups and baton charged the local
residents who persisted in attacking the DHRM men, despite the police
intervention.

Subsequently, policemen, in anti-riot gear, escorted the DHRM men from
Thumpode to Pallickal, where the activists staged a protest. The DHRM
men courted arrested peacefully at 2 p.m.

Mr. Baiju said members of both groups had been booked on charges of
rioting, unlawful assembly, attacking policemen on duty, and creating
enmity between different groups of people, under various sections of
the Indian Penal Code.

Rajendran Unnithan, president of the Madavoor panchayat, said local
residents and traders would observe a hartal in the area on Tuesday to
protest against the 'socially disruptive and militant activities' of
the DHRM.

He said only four Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe families in the area
supported the DHRM. The other families of the community had joined
hands with the rest of the residents to protest against the DHRM's
activities. He said the police action was pro-DHRM and directed solely
against the local residents.

[ZESTCaste] Team Anna rebuffed by Ilaiah on Lokpal Bill

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/Team-Anna-rebuffed-by-Ilaiah-on-Lokpal-Bill/articleshow/9962204.cms

Team Anna rebuffed by Ilaiah on Lokpal Bill
TNN | Sep 13, 2011, 03.56AM IST

HYDERABAD: Several dalit, OBC and minority organizations, that have
come together under the aegis of Citizens for Social Justice (CSJ),
have rejected the offer of talks by Team Anna to accommodate their
views in the Jan Lokpal Bill. Having realised that the weaker
sections, especially dalits and minorities, are opposed to certain
aspects of the ongoing anti-corruption movement, Team Anna invited
Kancha Ilaiah, the founder of CSJ, for talks.

Arvind Kejriwal, a prominent member of Team Anna, contacted Ilaiah, an
ideologue of weaker sections, to convey to him that they were open to
discuss dalit's anti-corruption agenda and ready to accommodate their
views to give the Lokpal Bill a popular touch.

According to sources, Kejriwal was unhappy with the BJP wanting to
take over the movement as well as the airing of pro-RSS slogans like
Vande Mataram by leaders of the movement.

He is also said to have told Ilaiah that Team Anna was trying to rid
the movement of any sectarian elements whose presence is hurting the
sentiments of other groups in the country.

Confirming the interaction with Kejriwal, Ilaiah said he did receive
an invitation from him to attend the recently-held Team Anna meeting
in Maharashtra. "The proposal is not acceptable to the CSJ. The
movement has gone deep into the hands of Hindutva forces. It is very
difficult to keep these forces away as the BJP is aiming to reap
electoral benefits by turning the movement into a Hindutva crusade
against corruption," Ilaiah said. He also added that the Lokpal Bill
proposed by Anna Hazare and his group would undermine the
constitutional governance which was labouriously built by B R Ambedkar
and other national leaders after a thorough debate.

Another objection raised by the CSJ was the mode of selection of the
Lokpal Bill.

"We are opposed to leaving the drafting of the Lokpal Bill to a
committee of Nobel laureates and Magasaysay award winner who are
invariably from the upper classes", Ilaiah said. He said the
constituent members of the CSJ were of the view that the Lokpal
institution would create a crisis in the parliamentary democracy.

Ilaiah along with other leaders of the CSJ, Joseph D' Souza, John
Dayal, Anis Mukhtadar, Asifuddin Mohammad and G Shankar said the
government bill, in whatever form it takes, has to be debated by the
whole nation in the 2014 election.

"If the BJP and the Team Anna think that the entire nation is with
them, they should go for elections with their version of Jan Lokpal
Bill in 2014 to get the approval of the majority," he said. Only a
national referendum on the issue would protect the Constitution and
democracy in the country, the leaders said.

[ZESTCaste] Police firing on Dalits in TN: Toll rises to 7

Police firing on Dalits in TN: Toll rises to 7
Press Trust Of India
Updated Sep 12, 2011 at 04:15pm IST

Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu: With two more persons succumbing to injuries
at a hospital, the death toll in the police firing on a stone-pelting
mob of Dalits, who indulged in violence following detention of their
leader John Pandian, has risen to seven, police said on Monday.

Two persons identified as Teerpukani and Vellaichamy succumbed to
injuries late on Sunday night.

Officials have suspended bus services to the rural areas in the
sensitive districts, including Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Sivaganga and
Virudhunagar as a precautionary step.

Additional police reinforcement have been brought from
Tiruchirappalli, police said.

Violence broke out yesterday after news spread that Pandian had been
detained at Tuticorin en route to Paramakudi when he was on his way to
pay homage to Dalit leader Imanuel Sekar on his death anniversary.

Police used tear gas and batons before firing at the crowd at Paramakudi.

Several people and police officials, including DIG Sandeep Mittal and
SP Senthil Velan and DSP Ganesan were injured in the stone pelting.
More than 15

vehicles were set ablaze in the violence.

Police said they had arrested 57 persons in Tirumangalam and more than
50 in Paramakudi for indulging in violence.

Local Dalit leaders blamed police for not making proper arrangements
to manage the huge crowd expected for paying homage to the Dalit
leader.

However, defending the police firing, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had
yesterday blamed some people for disrupting law and order "for their
own political gains."

"The protesters indulged in large-scale violence and torched police vehicles.

Police opened fire in self defence and to protect public property",
Jayalalithaa, who announced Rs one lakh compensation to the next of
kin of those killed, said.
