Tributes paid to Dr BR Ambedkar on death anniversary

Rich tributes were paid today to the Architect of Indian constitution
Dr BR Ambedkar on his 54th death anniversary which is observed as
'Mahaparinirvan Din'.

Lakhs of followers from all over the state converged at his memorial
"Chaityabhoomi" at Shivaji Park in Central Mumbai to pay their
respects to the Dalit icon.

Mumbai police has made elaborate security arrangements to ensure that
the day passes off peacefully without any untoward incident.

City police chief Sanjeev Dayal personally supervised the security
arrangements by visiting Shivaji Park and nearby areas.

Maharshtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan flew in from Nagpur to pay
homage to Ambedkar at Chaityabhoomi. Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar
also visited the memorial to pay homage.

At the state Secretariate, floral tributes were offered to the late
leader while at Vidhan Bhavan, Legislative assembly speaker Dilip
Walse-Patil paid tributes at the statue of Ambedkar.

BANGALORE: Shedding caste barriers in totality instead of merely
preaching about it, will be the real tribute to late Babasaheb
Ambedkar, BJP's Karnataka unit President K S Eshwarappa said today.

"Instead of mere preaching about oneness and equality, the actual
practice of shedding the caste barriers will be a real tribute to
Ambedkar", he said addressing a function commemorating the death
anniversary of Ambedkar.

Eshwarappa said it was "unfortuntate that a mass leader and father of
the Indian constitution" like Ambedkar had come to be known as a
"leader of the dalits".

Ambedkar's vision was not confined to the uplift of the dalits but all
those who are "weak and the downtrodden".

Later responding to a query on BJP President Nitin Gadkari's visit to
the city tomorrow, he said Gadkari, besides having a series of
interactions with party leaders and ministers, would be holding a
meeting with the state unit office bearers.

The talks would also focus on the preparations for the upcoming zilla
and taluk panchayat polls.

The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat lighting the lamp to inaugurate
the 3rd Annual Scheduled Tribes Convention, in the presence of Rajya
Sabha MP, Mr Shantaram Naik, Minister for Water Resources, Mr Filipe
Neri, Minister for Panchayats, Mr Manohar Azgaonkar, Quepem MLA, Mr
Babu Kavlekar and Curtorim MLA, Mr Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Sunday
at Ralloi, Curtorim.

MARGAO: The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, during the SC/ST
convention at Curtorim on Sunday, promised ` 5 crore to the SC
corporation and ` 1 crore specifically for the Dhangar community,
which has still not been notified as part of the ST.

"The Dangar community has not been named among STs and to ensure that
they are not neglected, the government has given them ` 1 crore," the
Chief Minister said while addressing a widely-attended ST convention
in the presence of the PWD and RDA Minister, Mr Churchill Alemao,
Panchayat Minister, Mr Manohar Azgaonkar, Quepem MLA, Mr Chandrakant
Kavlekar, Raia sarpanch, Mr Joseph Vaz and others.

Mr Kamat also said that his government had changed all land
acquisition procedures to ensure that all the "small persons" get fair
value for their lands if they were acquired by the government.

The government decision to give the affected people a better deal for
the land the government may have acquired was proof that the
government was helping the smaller people, the
Chief Minister claimed.

"This government will never allow injustice to happen to the SC/ST
community," he said.

The RDA Minister brought up the memory of Mr Floriano Vaz, who was
martyred during the Konkani agitation and also spoke about his efforts
to try and get as many Goan SC and ST into
the BPL list.

MP, Mr Shantaram Naik told the gathered that it was the Congress party
that had worked for the benefit of the community right from the time
of Indira Gandhi to Rajiv Gandhi and now to Ms Sonia Gandhi.

He also claimed that the Congress had asked for a special census and 8
seats out of 40 for the SC/ST community in the Assembly.
