Dalit writings vital part of Indian literature: Ananthamurthy

PTI | 01:09 PM,Sep 13,2010
Thiruvananthapuram,Sep 13 (PTI)Dalit literature, whether oral or
written, has been an integral and enlivening part of Indian literary
tradtions for centuries, eminent writer and academic U R Ananthamurthy
has said. For the depressed classes like tribals and those destined to
live in the lower rungs of social hierarchy literature had always been
a means to achieve "self-respect, the Jnanpith laureate said here last
evening. He was delivering a lecture on the "Contributions of Dalits
to Indian literature", organised by Dr K Ayyappa Panicker Foundation,
in honour of the late Malayalam poet and scholar. Quoting from Kannada
and other Indian languages, Ananthamurthy said while non-Dalits could
write about the Dalit situation they could not claim to represent the
Dalits. There had been several examples of non-Dalits writing on Dalit
situation, like the famous Kannada novel "Chomana Dudi" by Shivaram
Karanth. But there was a kind of arrogance when non-Dalits claimed to
represent Dalits, he noted. When Dalits themselves write about their
situation, it imparts to the literature a new strength and idiom. Some
kind of a protest had been part of the Dalit writings, especially in
Marathi since the time of Bhakti movement. Often the spark was convyed
through the rejection of the generally accepted "respectful" language
to express their "disrespectful" situation, he noted. A collection of
poems of Ayyappa Panicker, translated into English by writer and
journalist P Raveendran Nayar, was released on the occasion. Former
Kendra Sahitya Akademi Chairman Sachithanandan and former diplomat T P
Sreenivasan spoke on the contributions and influence of Ayyappa
Panicker to Malayalam literature.PTI NM RC 09131215

[ZESTCaste] Cop gets life term for burning Dalit man alive

Cop gets life term for burning Dalit man alive

Express News Service Posted online: Sat Sep 11 2010, 05:25 hrs
Ahmedabad : The Ahmedabad Sessions Court on Thursday sentenced a
police constable to life imprisonment for burning alive a 35-year-old
Dalit man who had voiced protest against him for allegedly taking
protection money from a bootlegger.
Special Judge D T Soni also ordered the convict — Hari Patel — to pay
Rs 25,000 to the legal heir of the deceased — Hasmukh Parmar — as
compensation.

The court also passed strictures against the investigating officer
from the Amaraiwadi police station for trying to save the culprit by
converting the case of murder into that of a suicide.

The judge directed the public prosecutor to send a certified copy of
the judgment to the police commissioner to do the needful against the
investigating officer.

"Investigating Officer Chandrashekhar Mudaliyar is examined and it
appears from his deposition that he started investigation on the basis
that it was a case of suicide in order to save the accused," the court
observed. "In fact, the accused being a policeman has attacked on Rule
of Law... This court records with pains that the manner and mode of
investigation carried out by the IO speaks much just to save a
policeman who has committed murder."

The incident had occurred on April 9, 2006, at Narsinh Nagar na
Chhapara chawl in the Amaraiwadi area. Parmar had an altercation with
Patel when the latter went to the chawl to collect hafta from a woman,
who was into bootlegging. Parmar had asked Patel to take action
against the woman instead of taking hafta, after which the policeman
beat him up before pouring kerosene and set him on fire.

Parmar told this to the police in his complaint and dying declaration.

The police, however, registered a case of abetment to suicide under
the provisions of the IPC and Prevention of Atrocities (Scheduled
Caste & Scheduled Tribe) Act against Patel.

During the trial, Assistant Public Prosecutor Bhavesh Patel brought
this lacuna in the charges to the notice of the court and moved an
application to add the murder charge. Patel was acquitted from the
charges of Atrocities Act violations.

SC slams Haryana for delay in nabbing culprits
PTI, Sep 11, 2010, 12.02am IST

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday slammed Haryana government for
delay in arresting 60 accused in the killing of two Dalits and
torching of houses allegedly by upper caste people at Mirchpur village
of Hisar district and said the authorities will have to answer more
questions.

"We will ask you (state government) more questions on the issue," a
Bench comprising justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly said when Haryana
government said it has arrested all the accused in compliance with its
August 26 order.

The apec court Bench said it will ask questions to authorities as they
swung into action only after the intervention of the apex court. "Why
did you arrest the culprits pursuant to the order of this court and
not before?" the Bench said adding it would like to know from where
the accused persons were arrested.

"From where did you arrest the accused? From their village or from
your own state or from Rajasthan or Punjab," the Bench said when the
state government counsel submitted that all the 60 accused have been
arrested and it has taken necessary steps to supply two quintals of
rice to the affected family in compliance with its orders.

While concluding the hearing, the Bench said: "These are age-old
problems prevalent in large areas of the country and it will take time
to change." The court asked the counsel for victims Collin Gonsalves
to respond to the report of Harayana government.

The Bench wanted to fix an early hearing but the state government's
counel sought eigh weeks time as a cooling up period.

However, the Bench said all the required replies and rejoinders have
to be completed within four weeks and posted the matter for October
25.

The Supreme Court had on August 26 directed the Haryana government to
make all possible efforts to arrest by September 10 all the accused
involved in the April 21 incident in which 150 houses belonging to
Dalits were set on fire.

Two persons had died in the raging fire that enveloped the houses of
Dalit residents of the village. The dead included Tara Chand and his
handicapped daughter Suman. Several other persons had also sustained
injuries due to arson, fire and rioting and houses of Balmikis were
set ablaze and damaged.

[ZESTCaste] Varun slams Maya for rise in crime against Dalits

Varun slams Maya for rise in crime against Dalits

Kautilya Singh Posted online: Sat Sep 11 2010, 05:50 hrs
Kanpur : Kanpur : BJP MP meets families of two rape victims
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Varun Gandhi, who met the families of
two alleged Dalit rape victims, Vandana and Kavita, at their native
villages near Kanpur on Friday, slammed Chief Minister Mayawati for
being "least concerned about the atrocities on the people of the
state".

Claiming that there has been a spurt in crime against financially weak
and Schedule Castes people during the incumbent BSP government in the
state, Varun said: "It is shocking that though the state has a woman
chief minister, she is least concerned about the atrocities being
committed on the people." He added that law and order has hit an all
time low in Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP MP from Pilibhit visited Parauli village, around 40 kms from
Kanpur, where he met the family members of Vandana. The 17-year-old
girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a village youth earlier this
month. After the police refused to register a case against the
accused, Sunil Sin-gh Bhadoria, despite several requests made by the
victim's family, Vandana committed suicide by setting herself on fire.
Varun assured her family of his party's complete support in their
fight for justice.

Later, he reached Ambikapur village in Shuklaganj to meet the family
of Kavita. The 18-year-old Dalit girl, who was admitted to a private
nursing home in Kanpur with head injuries, was allegedly raped by a
ward boy inside the ICU. She died on September 3.

"Both incidents are hear-trending, and the guilty persons should not
be spared at any cost," Varun said after meeting the two families. He
said that his party will raise the incidents in Parliament and
Assembly.

"Even though the BSP was voted in power by people from financially
weak background, it did not take long for the state government to
forget their voters," he said, and added that it was shocking to see
the government being insensitive to these incidents.

Surya Pratap Sahi, the state BJP chief who was accompanying the MP,
alleged that no one was safe in UP and said that the party will make a
list of similar incidents and take up the issue.
