[ZESTCaste] Dalit, BC, minority interests cannot be realised by feudal leadership: Ilaiah

Andhra Pradesh

Dalit, BC, minority interests cannot be realised by feudal leadership: Ilaiah

Special Correspondent

Weaker sections might end up more oppressed in Telangana dominated by
upper castes

Agitations creating distress for poor while the rich leading them are
least affected

HYDERABAD: Noted intellectual Kancha Ilaiah has cautioned Dalits, BCs
and minorities not to have illusions that their social, political,
economic and educational aspirations would be realised in separate
Telangana if the present political Joint Action Committee was at the
helm.

Distant possibility

Speaking at a seminar on 'Telangana State - social justice' here on
Thursday, Prof. Ilaiah said that the political JAC was dominated by
upper caste feudal lords to protect their vested interests and weaker
sections might end up more oppressed in such Telangana State than
under Andhra capitalists.

Noting that the latest developments in New Delhi did not hold out any
possibility for formation of Telangana in the near future, Prof.
Ilaiah said even if the State was delayed by 20 years, only leadership
of Dalits, BCs and minorities forming majority population alone would
pave way for democratic and social Telangana.

He said it was important to provide downtrodden with access to free
and compulsory quality English medium education from KG to 12th class,
help them become officers, Ministers with knowledge and wisdom to make
independent decisions.

'Instigating people'

Likening K. Chandrasekhar Rao's TRS to Maharashtra's Shiva Sena, he
said he was instigating people of one region against another.

Plea to students

Urging students not to resort to bus, rail roko and suicides, he said
it only created distress for the poor while the rich leading the
movement were least affected.

Other speakers like I. Bhimrao, M. Lakshmaiah, K. Krishna, Prof.
Komranna, Prof. D. Vinod Kumar emphasised that Dalits should lead the
movement unitedly for Telangana to get back their land, resources,
rights for education, employment and political power from upper
castes.

[ZESTCaste] USA: Can positive affirmations change anything?

http://www.edmondsun.com/features/local_story_007192225.html

Can positive affirmations change anything?

Voices of Faith
McClatchy-Tribune News Service

'As we think, so we become'

Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery: From the
Buddhist perspective, all we can work on is our own mind. So, a
positive attitude will definitely help us deal with the world in more
effective and compassionate ways. The Buddha said 2,500 years ago,
"The thought manifests as the word; the word manifests as the deed.
The deed develops into habit; and habit hardens into character. So
watch the thought and its ways with care; let it spring from love.
Born out of concern for all beings .... The shadow follows the body
and never leaves it. In the same way, as we think, so we become."

If we examine our mind, we can see that all of our actions, by body,
speech and mind, begin first as a thought. And where do thoughts come
from? They don't arise from nothing. Thoughts manifest as a result of
past causes and conditions. Therefore, in Buddhism we often recite
supplications or aspirations to remind us of the positive or virtuous
mind states that we hope to actualize.

As part of our daily practice, we recite a type of positive
affirmation known as the Four Immeasurables, which are, "May all
beings be endowed with happiness; may all beings be free from
suffering; may all beings never be separated from happiness; may all
beings abide in equanimity, undisturbed by the eight worldly
concerns." So, positive affirmations are powerful ways of reminding
ourselves of how we want to live our lives.

Affirmative truth can halt unjust practice

Pastor Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ:
There are positive assertions made that resulted in notable change.

Affirmations of truth have been made down through the ages that have
impacted individuals, social, political and religious circumstances
resulting in change.

But of particular interest are assertions about religions. Religious
affirmations, statements, assertions and declarations should be in
respect of boundaries that have been in existence biblically and
theologically from the time of "In the beginning." There is this side
circumstance in every religious assertion made that falls under
side-bar scrutiny. This side-bar circumstance upholds whatever
statements are made. For example, "Jesus is the Christ" of God (1st
John 5:1). This affirmation is set in history as foundational based on
the Gospel of Salvation.

"All Men are Created Equal" is a perpetual thread of affirmative truth
based on the biblical discourse of Genesis 1:26, 27. The Civil Rights
Movement of the 1960s and the affirmative action programs are an
outgrowth of this doctrine. The purpose of such programs is to effect
change, to bring about the demise of unjust practices that are yet
beholden to the past.

In particular, the more basis of foundation for religious assertions,
the more they are able to effect change. These statements, given a
biblical history, are established in the affirmative and produce
change.

[ZESTCaste] Law sought on quota for SC/ST in private sector

http://www.hindu.com/2010/01/07/stories/2010010753350300.htm

Tamil Nadu - Vellore

Law sought on quota for SC/ST in private sector

Special Correspondent

Meet organised by RPI for Ambedkar anniversary

Prakash Ambedkar, national president, RPI, presenting an award to a
volunteer of RPI on the occasion of 53rd death anniversary of B.R.
Ambedkar, in Vellore on Wednesday.

VELLORE: The Oppressed People's Unity Pledge-Taking Day Conference,
organised by the Republican Party of India (RPI) in connection with
the 53rd death anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar here on Tuesday, urged the
Central government to bring in legislation without delay to ensure
reservation for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the
private sector. It said it is in the light of the dilution of
reservation in the public sector on account of privatisation and the
livelihood of the oppressed classes "becoming a question mark."

A resolution was adopted at the conference presided over by C.K.
Thamizharasan, Tamil Nadu State president of the RPI, in the presence
of national president Prakash Ambedkar.

The conference urged the United Progressive Alliance government to
bear the education expenses of Dalit students in all colleges. It
requested the Centre to ensure reservation for SCs/STs in its higher
educational institutions. The conference appealed for a separate
budget for schemes for the welfare of the SCs/STs, as done for the
Railways. It wanted allocations to be made directly to the Department
of Adi Dravidar Welfare of State governments for implementation.

The conference appealed to the State government to establish bank
branches for the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development
Corporation (TAHDCO) in all districts and to enhance the TAHDCO loans
by three times. It urged the Central and State governments to waive
the TAHDCO loans and educational loans granted to the SC/ST people.

The conference urged the State government to prevent the Palar River
from becoming dry and polluted and to take steps to strengthen the
waterbodies in such a way that they permanently yield water. It
pleaded for the extension of the Hogenakkal scheme to Vellore.

Mr. Prakash Ambedkar called upon the Dalits to be vigilant and ensure
that the schemes meant for the welfare of the SCs/STs are not only
implemented but also lead to the fruition of the efforts taken by
Dalit organisations.

With many SCs/STs having educated themselves and become doctors,
engineers, business people and entered the Information Technology and
management sector thanks to the reservation brought by the efforts of
B.R. Ambedkar in the government sector, the Central government was
slowly depriving the Dalits of scholarships and subsidies. He recalled
the words of his grandfather, B.R. Ambedkar, who said that the moment
the Dalits stopped being vigilant, exploitation would start. Mr.
Prakash Ambedkar said that the present problem arising out of the
announcement of a separate Telangana State, leading to the demand for
the bifurcation of other States, would not have arisen, had the
Central government followed the advice of B.R. Ambedkar to form
smaller States during the process of linguistic reorganisation of
States. Mr. Thamizharasan accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
government of failure to introduce new schemes for the welfare of
Dalits. He urged the DMK government to provide for reservation for
Dalits in the Cabinet, and the Central government to increase the
reservation for Dalits and tribals from 19 to 22 per cent. C.
Senguttuvan, State general secretary of RPI, spoke.
