7 Mar, 2012, 03.13AM IST, Ullekh NP,ET Bureau
Mayawati was rejected for elephantine misgovernance: UP Samajwadi
Party President Akhilesh Yadav

Victory has many friends and Akhilesh Yadav knows it only too well.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) Uttar Pradesh unit president says he knows
his friend from his foe. He says he doesn't want to be carried away by
this triumph. Instead, the Samajwadi Party will focus on delivering
good governance. Yadav spoke to ET . Excerpts:

What is your message to the people of Uttar Pradesh?

I want to thank the people of my state for their love, and for voting
beyond caste. The people of Uttar Pradesh have not only voted out
India's most corrupt regime, but they have also reacted against an
ineffective government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh and the first family of the party.

What is your promise to potential investors?

We want to promise them a hassle-free atmosphere. To all those who
want to invest in the state, my appeal to both individuals and
corporates is that Uttar Pradesh needs more investment and we will
make everything conducive for them. We assure them absolutely normal
law and order situation and easy acquisition of land.

Any other plans to boost the state's economy?

Like I said last time, we will work towards creating robust economies
in each district in the state (In an interview in the run-up to the
polls, Akhilesh had told ET: "Moradabad, as you know, is known for its
brass industry, Agra for finished leather products and so on. Each
district has an economy and there is a lot of tradition associated
with it... We will facilitate these small and medium industries to
grow.")

Why do you say that the people of Uttar Pradesh have voted beyond caste?

People of the state are now convinced that we represent and stand for
the whole of the state, and not just for socalled traditional vote
base. We are for the development of Uttar Pradesh, and we are for
people cutting across caste and community lines of the state.

But your traditional vote bank remains the Muslims and the Yadavs.

We have gone beyond that. We have successfully got others also to back
us. This victory proves that.

How do you respond to former Samajwadi Party man-turned Congress
leader Beni Prasad Verma's comment that he prefers the Bahujan Samaj
Party to SP?

These are people I don't want to take seriously. These are loudmouths
who have no say in the making of the next government. They are highly
frustrated people and I have nothing more to say about them. I wish
them well anyway.

Congress had tried to woo the Muslims, but failed at it. Will you be
allocating additional quota in jobs to the Muslims?

Loud statements by Congress leaders offering additional quota for the
Muslims made no impact (he doesn't want to name Union minister Salman
Khurshid).... The new government will immediately implement the
recommendations of the (Rajinder) Sachar Committee Report (which
studied the backwardness of the Indian Muslims). We will implement the
recommendations to the extent it is possible for us.

Do you expect any such move to create a rift within your traditional vote base?

No. We will factor in everything before going ahead with the
implementation of the recommendations.

What do you expect your position in the state Cabinet to be?

Netaji ( Mulayam Singh Yadav) will be the chief minister. The rest,
the party will decide.

[ZESTCaste] UP election result: Mayawati blames Congress, BJP for defeat; says 70% Muslims picked Mulayam

UP election result: Mayawati blames Congress, BJP for defeat; says 70%
Muslims picked Mulayam

NDTV Correspondent, Updated: March 07, 2012 13:43 IST

Lucknow: Unfettered defeat often propels politicians to promise
introspection and admit that they failed to give voters what they
wanted. Not Mayawati. After resigning as Uttar Pradesh's chief
minister today, she praised her government for its hard work and
introduction of reforms. Her defeat, she said, was a direct result of
the communalization of the elections by the Congress and BJP.

Mayawati's attempt for a fifth term as chief minister was crushed by a
state exhausted by corruption, poverty, and an administration that
showed no interest in development. Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party won
80 seats, compared to the 206 it won in the last elections that had
placed her in power. Not only did Uttar Pradesh punish Mayawati, but
it turned overwhelmingly to her old political rival Mulayam Singh
Yadav, giving his Samajwadi Party a whopping 228 seats - the strongest
mandate for a party in UP in two decades.

Without referring to either him or his party by name, Mayawati said
70% of the state's Muslims, according to her party's analysis, had
voted for Mr Yadav. For this, she said, the two national parties, BJP
and Congress, must accept blame. Mayawati said the Congress created
the problem with its hard-selling of a special quota for Muslims in
jobs and universities. Hindu voters, she said, panicked and moved
towards the BJP, which played into their fears that the Congress would
promote Muslims at their expense. Meanwhile, Muslims found that the
Congress was not a strong enough party to back. So they opted for Mr
Yadav.

Further damage from the BJP, according to the Mayawati, came via its
pursuit of upper caste voters and Other Backward Castes (OBCs). As a
result, she said, these votebanks spread their support among different
parties including hers. Once again, she claims, Mr Yadav benefitted.

Mayawati was quick to claim that her traditional vote-bank of Dalits
or lower caste voters, stood by her. "I thank them from the bottom of
my heart," she said.

The former chief minister's laser-like focus on spread of votes is
understandable. In 2007, she arrived in power riding her version of a
rainbow coalition - she had managed to pitch her Bahujan Samaj Party
as a one-stop option for upper caste, Dalit and Muslim voters.
Candidates for those elections had been carefully arranged to
represent the different factions. And her much-analyzed social
engineering worked, with UP giving its first decisive verdict in two
decades. That meant Mayawati needed no partner to run the government
in UP. And she became the state's first chief minister to complete a
five-year term.

She said her party will work with its cadres on educating voters and
freeing them from "this trap of Hindu and Muslim politics."

In UP, state governments are known for using their power to target
political opponents, often by filing police cases against members of
other parties. Combatting political vendetta may pre-occupy the
former chief minister. But in Delhi, where she has 22 MPS in the Lok
SAbha, Mayawati may become a favourite of the Congress. Its own
miserable performance in UP and the four other states that just voted
has left the Congress authority within the UPA collation at the Centre
greatly diminished. Mamata Banerjee, the single biggest member of the
alliance after the Congress, has been taking on the party repeatedly
over crucial legislation and policy - she forced the Prime Minister to
suspend his planned reforms in retail, for example. In addition to Ms
Banerjee's wavering attention and loyalty, the Congress now has to
deal with a rejuvenated Samajwadi Party. Mr Yadav has in the past
rescued the Congress by voting with the government on important
matters. His supersize victory in Uttar Pradesh will give him more
bargaining power than ever before.

[ZESTCaste] Majority of Muslim votes went to SP: Mayawati

http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article2969803.ece?homepage=true

Lucknow, March 7, 2012
Majority of Muslim votes went to SP: Mayawati
PTI

Accusing Congress and BJP of raising the minority sub-quota issue
mid-way during the UP polls for their political gains, BSP supremo
Mayawati on Wednesday said this helped in large-scale transfer of
Muslim votes to Samajwadi Party.

Talking to reporters soon after submitting her resignation to UP
Governor B L Joshi, Ms. Mayawati said 70 per cent of the Muslim votes
had gone to the SP due to the minority reservation issue.

"You all know that Congress raised the issue of reservation for
backward Muslims for their political gains soon after the Vidhan Sabha
elections were declared and this was opposed strongly to by the BJP,"
Ms. Mayawati said.

She alleged that the BJP also tried to attract the upper castes and
the OBCs towards them for electoral benefits.

"Due to this, there was a fear in the Muslim community that the BJP
may come to power. Finding the Congress weak and thinking that the
OBCs and upper castes would vote for the BJP, Muslims voted not for
the Congress but the SP," Ms. Mayawati claimed.

She said there were apprehensions in the minds of Muslims that the
upper castes and OBCs would not vote for the BSP and, hence, they
voted for the SP.

Except the Dalits, the Hindu votes-particularly those of upper castes
got divided among many parties and the SP gained from this, she said.

"70 per cent of the Muslim votes were transferred to the SP," Ms. Mayawati said.

Ms. Mayawati claimed that the Dalit votes did not get divided and
remained with the BSP.

"All across the state, the Dalits have voted for the BSP. This is the
reason the BSP is number 2. Otherwise, it would have been left far
behind.... My position would have been like that of Lalu (Prasad) in
Bihar," she said.

The out-going chief minister alleged that the new SP government will
put her welfare programmes in cold storage and take the state
backwards by many years.

"Very soon the people of the state will get fed up with the
functioning of the SP government and remember the good governance
during the BSP rule," she said.

Enumerating the various welfare schemes of her government, she alleged
that the Centre's attitude towards the state during her rule was
negative.

Ms. Mayawati indicated that she would work towards reviving her party
in the coming days.

"Our party will revive its cadre and work on taking the state out of
the Hindu-Muslim mindset," she said, adding that the BSP would also
woo other communities into the party—fold.

The BSP chief also hit out at the media for keeping the minority
sub—quote issue alive by highlighting the issue repeatedly during the
polls.
