Dalit family embraces Islam, media loses objectivity
Submitted by admin4 on 16 October 2011 - 2:32pm

By Rehan Ansari, TwoCircles.net,

Mumbai: Mainstream media once again lost objectivity in reporting
Islam and Muslims. A Dalit family of five living in a Mumbai suburb
converted to Islam after studying its teachings. The neighbors of
their community retaliated violently and attacked the family leading
to a communal clash as the family called Muslim neighbors for help.
The media covered the incident as a communal clash relying wholly on
police version. None bothered to reach the family.

This is the story of a Dalit family, living in Valmiki Nagar in
Bandra, a western suburb of Mumbai.

Mumbai Dalit family showing their wounds they received in attack by
Dalit neighbors after they announced their conversion to Islam

"We converted to Islam because of its teachings and we do not have any
affair with Muslim boys nor were we forced to convert" said Harsha
Anil Dagao, 17, Jagruti, 15 and Gauri, 13. These three minor girls
reverted to Islam along with their family and renamed as Zohra, Sadiya
and Iqra. They added, "We studied Quran and Fazaile Aamal in Hindi and
believed that Islam is the true religion."

"We have been brutally assaulted by the people of our community even
Police arrested us for rioting but we will not leave Islam" exclaimed
Zohra and her two sisters who were later released on bail by the
court.

Dayawati Dagao, mother of these juvenile girls is also reverted to
Islam and named Aisha. She was arrested too and granted bail later by
the court.

Anil Dagao, the father of these girls, who was also studying Islamic
literature converted to Islam after the incidence.

The clash began when the Dalit family who had converted to Islam were
being targeted and beaten up brutally by their community people.
Situation turned violent when a few Muslims living in the area tried
to interfere in the matter when approached by the victim Dalit family.

But covering the incident, the media forgot the basics of journalism –
to take the view of all parties. They relied on police version of the
incident and published their stories. Here are a few.

Times of India screamed, "Affair sparks clash, 5 cops among 14 hurt."

Reporter went on with his story, "The girl, who lives in a BKC slum
along with her two sisters and mother, had a relationship with a boy
living in the vicinity and planned to marry. However, members of her
community had reservations and this led to tension between the two
groups."

Free Press Journal reported, "Cops state that the unrest was triggered
after a blossoming love affair between a Dalit girl and a Muslim youth
came to the fore."

Mumbai Mirror reported, "Police say the cause of the clash was that
two people, from different communities, were having an affair. When
the girl's parents found out, they assaulted the boy. Later, the boy
brought a few friends along and retaliated, which led to an escalation
of tension and violence."

Indian Express reported, "The clashes occurred when members of one
community objected to a girl's alleged relationship with the boy of
the other community."

No reporter even bothered to talk to the family and report their quotes.

Thirty people including 5 policemen were injured in the clash erupted
in the night of October 7, 2011.

[ZESTCaste] Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati stokes Dalit pride

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/uttar-pradesh-mayawati-stokes-dalit-pride-bsp/1/155246.html

Mail Today, October 17, 2011 | UPDATED 14:06 IST
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati stokes Dalit pride

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's speech inaugurating the Rs 685
crore National Dalit Memorial and Green Garden in Noida was
many-layered. It was primarily a call to arms to the Dalit community
to once again line up behind her in the run-up to the state assembly
elections. But it was also a declaration that Dalit power had reached
the gates of the national capital, Delhi. She repeatedly stressed the
importance of the Dalit Memorial in the context of the many monuments
and memorials that lay on the west bank of the Yamuna river that
separates Noida from New Delhi.

It was clear from the speech that she viewed the Congress party as her
principal threat. Though she had trounced all other parties in the
last assembly polls in 2007, the Congress' performance in the Lok
Sabha elections of 2009, where the party won as many as 21 out of 80
seats, has engendered a healthy caution in the Dalit leader.

Ms Mayawati used the speech to position herself against corruption and
criminalisation. Notwithstanding the charges she faces herself, she
took the opportunity to welcome the campaigns against corruption
launched by Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev.

But when it comes to the next assembly elections, Ms Mayawati will not
have to answer to the media or a select gathering, but the people of
her state. They will decide whether or not she has fought against
criminalisation and corruption.

More important, they are bound to ask questions about the development
of the state, especially with the recent dynamism being displayed in
neighbouring Bihar. She may not find it easy to simply pass on the
blame to past governments because people are aware now that change can
come in their lives in a matter of years, should a capable leader push
for it.

[ZESTCaste] Digvijay's tirade shows Cong's anti-dalit mentality: BSP

Digvijay's tirade shows Cong's anti-dalit mentality: BSP
October 16, 2011 21:20 IST

Taking strong exception to Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh's
[ Images ] criticism of Uttar Pradesh [ Images ] chief minister
Mayawati's [ Images ] fad for her personal statues and monuments, the
ruling Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh has termed the tirade as a
"reflection of the Congress party's anti-dalit mentality."

Reacting to Singh's statement, an unnamed BSP spokesman (sounding more
like Mayawati herself) issued a stinging rejoinder on Sunday evening,
not only condemning the Congress on various counts but also
threatening "to teach the Congress a lesson at the forthcoming 2012
state assembly election."

Claiming that the installation of Mayawati's statues was being done in
fulfillment of her political mentor and BSP founder Kanshi Ram's last
wishes, the press statement said, "Congress leaders see nothing wrong
about the erection of statues and monuments after various members of
the Gandhi-Nehru family all over the country, but they have serious
objection to a few monuments built by me to commemorate those great
social reformers who championed the cause of downtrodden dalits".

He went on to add, "The UP chief minister has no craving to get her
own statues installed; what has been done was to uphold the wishes of
the late Kandhi Ram, who had explicitly spelt it out in his written
will that her statues be installed in every memorial erected in his
honour or in memory of other dalit icons."

With a view to justifying the expenditure of over Rs. 6000 crores on
these memorials and statues in Lucknow [ Images ], and in Noida, the
spokesman sought to claim, "The Congress leader is clearly trying to
mislead the public by giving a false impression that lots of money has
gone into those constructions when the fact remains that the
expenditure was not more than one percent of the each year's budget."
Significantly, UP's annual budget was of the order of Rs. 165,000
crores.

Reacting to the corruption charge against Mayawati, the BSP spokesman
felt that it was high time for the Congress leader to realise that
those who lived in glass houses should not throw stones. "Digvijay has
no business making wild accusation of corruption against the BSP
government when his own Congress-led United Progressive Alliance [
Images ] regime was neck-deep in various scams including 2G, 3G and
Commonwealth games [ Images ] bungling," the spokesman pointed out.

Danam booked for beating up biker
indianexpress Express News Service , The New Indian Express

HYDERABAD: Minister Danam Nagender and his associates allegedly
thrashed a motorcyclist alleging that he was among a group who threw
eggs on his vehicle when he visited Addagutta to attend a private
function on Sunday.

Following the incident, Telangana activists staged a protest in front
of the Tukaram Gate police station demanding action against the
minister.

A case under SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act was registered
against Nagender based on a complaint lodged by the injured.

The unsavoury incident occurred when Nagender and his associates went
to Addagutta to inaugurate a private clinic. As he reached the place,
a group of Telangana Rashtra Samithi activists descened on the scene
and demanded the minister's stance on separate Telangana. They threw
eggs which fell on his vehicle. As infuriated Nagender and his men
emerged out of their vehicles, the Telangana activists took to their
heel. Two persons, said to be part of the group of protestors, started
their two-wheeler to leave the place.

As Nagender's associates rushed towards them, one of the duo,
Narasimha Yadav, managed to run away but the other, Sravan Kumar, was
caught by the minister's men who thrashed him and damaged his
motorcycle. Yet, Sravan managed to free himself and fled into a nearby
house. Meanwhile, police came to his rescue. Nagender's associates
barged into the house, and kicked and punched Sravan. Local TRS
activists reached Tukaram Gate police station and staged a protest
alleging police were refusing to register a case against the minister
for attacking Sravan, a Scheduled Caste member.

In the night, police registered a case under the SC/ST Act against
Nagender and his associates
