[ZESTCaste] Students rename themselves to mark Ambedkar Jayanthi

Students rename themselves to mark Ambedkar Jayanthi
Neha Pushkarna, TNN, Apr 15, 2011, 04.06am IST

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, Hindu College student Naushad Ali Khan became
Naushad Gandhi. Businessman Bharat Bhushan Sharma changed his name to
Bharat Bhushan Bhratiya. Dr Siddharth Chaudhry chose to be called just
Siddharth. Around 50 doctors, students, businessmen and government
officials dropped their surnames on Thursday to contribute towards
making society casteless on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. With
hands on their hearts, they took an oath to look beyond the divisions
of caste. So from Thursday onwards, they ceased to be Brahmins,
Kshatriyas, Vaishyas or Shudras. They were just free Indians.

"Castes still divide people in India. Back at my village in Almora in
Uttaranchal, we still have two wells - one for the people of 'lower
castes' and the other for the rest. It's time to end such
discrimination and it can be done only by starting a movement. I have
taken the first step by giving up my caste," said Devendra Diwan, who
was Diwan Singh Negi before taking the oath. Brought together by NGO
Swaraj over a period of one year, these people will now advertise
their new names in the newspaper and get the old names changed on
necessary documents.

[ZESTCaste] Gujarat Dalits thumb nose at upper castes

http://www.siasat.com/english/news/gujarat-dalits-thumb-nose-upper-castes

Gujarat Dalits thumb nose at upper castes
Saturday, 16 April 2011

Ahmedabad, April 16: Mahatma Gandhi had used the boycott mantra to
great advantage against the British. Over 60 years after Bapu passed
away, upper castes in the state he was born used it against the
Dalits. But they did not anticipate that the Dalits would counter this
move with another of the Mahatma's teachings — self- reliance. Meet
the people who started their own economy in under three months

SHOWING courage and aptitude in the face of adversity, 15 Dalit
families in Rampar village have set a shining example by setting up
their own economy against all odds.

When the dominant castes, angry over the " untouchables" entering the
village temple for the first time in their lives, ordered boycott of
the 15 families on January 22, little did they realise that the Dalits
would close ranks and fight back unitedly. In the process, the latter
proved that they were not dependent on the higher castes and could
easily survive the pariah handicap.

Less than three months later, the Dalits in Rampar village of Muli
block in Surendranagar have created their own, independent economy and
are marching on in their journey towards self- reliance. The village,
220 km from Ahmedabad and 65 km from Surendranagar district
headquarters, is home to 750 people belonging to 75 families of the
Chualia Koli community, three of the Bharvad community and 14 of the
Devipujak community, all of whom are OBCs. Besides, 15 families of
Kadva Patels also live in the village.

" Caste discrimination and untouchability have been major Parshottam
Chavda Ratan Chavda issues here," social worker Romila Parmar said. "
The upper caste grocers would hand us things from a distance and
sprinkle water on our cash before accepting it," Ratan Chavda said. "
They never treated us like humans, but we put up with it," she added.

But things changed this January when Navsarjan, a pan- Gujarat NGO
working for Dalits, organised a rally in Rampar village.

" On January 22, we symbolically burnt untouchability outside the
village and entered the temple for the first time in our lives.
Earlier, even the thought was taboo," Parshottam Chavda said.

" Though the headman had allowed us permission for entering the
temple, the entire village ganged up to boycott us. They swore in the
name of goddess Meldi ( the village deity) that those crossing the
line would be slapped with a ` 5,000- fine," he said, adding, " They
wouldn't let us travel in their tempos, have flour from the village
mills or buy groceries." The 15 Dalit families were faced with a hard
time, not knowing how to lead a normal daily life.

[ZESTCaste] KVPS alleges social boycott of Dalits

http://www.hindu.com/2011/04/15/stories/2011041554620500.htm

Andhra Pradesh

KVPS alleges social boycott of Dalits

Staff Reporter

SANGAREDDY: The Kula Vivaksha Porata Samithi (KVPS) alleged that
around 100 Dalit families of Siripuram village in Hatnoora mandal were
facing social boycott for the past one week.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, KVPS state vice-president K.
Rajaiah alleged that these families were socially boycotted over the
issue of allotment of land for the installation of Dr. Ambedkar statue
in the village. "These families are not being given work in the
fields. Newspaper supply was stopped, even servant maids stopped
coming to work. They are facing serious problems and we demand the
district administration to respond immediately and act against those
responsible for the boycott,'' he said.

[ZESTCaste] In Bihar, OBC homes torched after inter-caste marriage

In Bihar, OBC homes torched after inter-caste marriage

Santosh Singh Posted online: Sun Apr 17 2011, 02:16 hrs
Patna : Police in Darbhanga have arrested 46 people from the upper
castes for allegedly torching over a dozen houses of OBC and Dalit
families following a row over an inter-caste marriage. No loss of life
has been reported so far.

According to police, over 100 "upper caste people" from Panchog
village in the Bishanpur area attacked neighbouring Harichanda
village, inhabitated mostly by the OBC Shah community, on April 14
midnight. They allegedly set on fire thatched houses of the Shahs, as
well as six adjoining houses of Dalits.

Residents said there was tension ever since a Brahmin youth married an
OBC woman on April 14. The OBC community organised the marriage at a
temple in Darbhanga and left out the youth's family.

While the groom belonged to Panchog, with a population of over 8,000
that is largely Brahmin, the bride was from Harichanda, home to some
4,000 people.

Panchog and Harichanda villages have had a long history of caste
violence, with clashes being witnessed in 1994, 1985 and 1979.

After the torching incident, the couple left Panchog for their own
safety, police said.

Matters also worsened when Rajiv Choudhary from Panchog was allegedly
roughed up by the Shahs while he was visiting Harichanda in connection
with the forthcoming panchayat elections.

Darbhanga SP Vikas Vaibhav said the inter-caste marriage may have been
the trigger for the April 14 burning of houses. "We have arrested 46
upper caste people for arson and have deployed forces." Most menfolk
of Panchog have left the village, fearing arrest.

The SP said that the concrete houses hadn't suffered much damage while
the thatched houses had been partially destroyed.

Since 1992, Bihar Police has received 3,493 reports of Dalit
atrocities. Of these, 1,895 cases are still pending.
