Glowing tributes to Ambedkar

VARANASI: A number of programmes were organised in different parts of
the city on Monday to pay tribute to BR Ambedkar, marking his 54th
death anniversary.

Terming Ambedkar as a great leader and social thinker, divisional
commissioner AK Upadhyaya while inaugurating the main function at
Ambedkar Park, Kutchehry, said that the nation would always remember
his contributions not only for framing the Constitution but also for
his untiring efforts to uplift the downtrodden and underprivileged
section of the society. IG RP Singh also highlighted the contributions
of the leader in ensuring social equity in the country on the
occasion.

Akhil Bhartiya Anusuchit Jati Janjati Karmachari Kalyan Sangh had
organised the programme in the city. Similarly, a number of other
organisations and political parties including People Meditation
Committee on Human Rights ( PMCHR) and district and city unit of
Congress party also organised functions to pay tribute to Ambedkar to
commemorate his death anniversary.

'Jai Bhim' was the slogan of the day as a sea of people gathered in an
annual pilgrimage to Shivaji Park and nearby Chaityabhoomi, to pay
homage to their leader, Dalit icon and framer of the Indian
Constitution, Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Monday was Ambedkar's 54th death
anniversary — he was cremated at Chaityabhoomi, near Dadar Chowpatty —
and devotees dressed in white, waving the blue flag of the Dalit
community — braved sweltering heat and serpentine queues for a glimpse
of his shrine.

"We wait for this day all year," said Santosh Londhe, 37, who
travelled from Pune and waited in line for four hours. "Ambedkar gave
a reason and a meaning to our lives."

Uttam Nikhale, 54, travelled to Mumbai all the way from Nanded — an
annual ritual.

"In 21 years, I have never missed the Mahaparinirvan Din [death
anniversary]. It's a pilgrimage," he said. At Shivaji Park, a
community fair of bookstands, poster stalls and refreshment kiosks
drew lakhs of visitors.

"I visited the shrine last Wednesday so I could concentrate on the
business," said Manoj Badawe, his stall surrounded by customers.
Badawe has been selling books on Ambedkar for the past week. "December
6 is always a huge day for sales," he said.

Across the 28-acre park, volunteers, non-governmental organisations
and municipal workers distributed free food and conducted free health
checks.

For some, it was a chance to create awareness on issues like the ills
of smoking and alcoholism, via street plays and folk songs. Surekha
Chaugule, secretary of the Riddhi Siddhi Mahila Mandal, a women's
organisation from Lower Parel, organised a street play on the ills of
alcoholism.

"This is our first Mahaparinirvan Din performance," Chaugule said.
"It's one of those rare occasions when you can reach out to people
from across the country and we wanted to send out a social message on
how alcoholism can ruin a family."

Back in the queue for the shrine, Gaikwad (who did not wish to give
his first name) from Satara seemed elated, despite the heat, the
crowds — and the effort of balancing his son on his shoulders. "At
least my boy will get a glimpse of our God," he said. "I will keep
waiting till we get there."

Mumbai : For Pune's Prashant Hire, a self-proclaimed 'Ambedkarist',
the annual visit to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar still holds an element of
surprise. "A man about whom we read and study today, derived his sense
of understanding from various types of literature he read over his
lifetime," says Hire, who visits different places in Mumbai around
this time every year in search of books from Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar's
personal collection.
Mumbai, where Dr Ambedkar spent his formative years, still houses most
of the books from his vast personal collection. After settling here in
the 1930s, Ambedkar oversaw the construction of a house in Dadar
called Rajgriha, where he stocked his 50,000-odd books.

But today these books have found their way into schools and
universities, thanks to the People's Education Society set up by
Babasaheb in 1944. "The People's Education Society has been by far
successful in spreading his personal collection out to as many
universities as possible so that maximum people have access to his
books," says Dr Suresh Mane, Head of Mumbai University's Department of
Law. But this decentralised approach also creates trouble, sometimes,
for scholars and researchers, who have to hunt for those books, Mane
adds.

"Dr Ambedkar showed a very strange mix of inclinations, from mysticism
to strands of Marxist philosophy and Buddhist humanitarianism,"
explains Hire. Ambedkar most revered Edvin Seligman, an economist and
his mentor, Historian James Shotwell, who had a great influence on his
life, and philosopher John Dewey, whom he often quoted in his
speeches. And naturally there are a lot of books from the trio in his
collection.

"Bhimrao took it upon himself to gain as much knowledge as was
possible in his lifetime. He was a voracious reader. His interest in
Kabir and Tukaram is seen in the number of books he had gathered. He
tried to lay his hands on anything and everything and that made him a
scholar," says Mane.

But Professor Sridhar Kale points out that unlike other great figures,
Babasaheb's collection is not preserved under one roof and that has
helped more and more people to access his works. "During his lifetime,
one thing that he was overly protective about was his mammoth
collection of books. By 1944, he had set up the People's Education
Society and subsequently the Sidharth College in Mumbai, followed by
the Milind Mahavidyalaya in Aurangabad in 1950. On any given day, you
see people visting the libraries in these places and reading his
books," Kale adds.

Mayawati inaugurates 15 projects on Ambedkar's death anniversary

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today inaugurated 15 new
projects, including a new park in the state capital, on the occasion
of 54th death anniversary of architect of Indian constitution Dr BR
Ambedkars.

"In the honour of Dr Ambedkar, who throughout his life struggled to
change the system of discrimination and inequality," Mayawati said
after inaugurating Dr Ambedkar Gomti Vihar Khan project.

She also announced setting up of two new statues of Ambedkar in the city.

BJP MPs for declaring Ambedkar's home as national monument

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of B R Ambedkar's death anniversary, a
delegation of Dalit MPs from BJP submitted a memorandum to Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that a proper budget be allocated to
maintain as a national monument the house where he breathed his last.

Ambedkar died in his house at 26, Alipur Road in the capital on
December 6, 1956.

"It is a historical location and it has been declared a National
Monument by the NDA Government, but it has not been maintained as a
National Monument. So, we request that proper budget should be
provided for the maintenance of 26, Alipur Road, New Delhi and it
should be developed as Rajghat," the memorandum said.

It was signed by BJP MPs Arjun Meghwal, Ashok Argal, Kirit P Solanki,
Virendra Kashyap, Dushyant Kumar Goutam and party spokesperson R N
Kovind.

The memorandum sought the prime minister's intervention to stop
construction work by MHOW Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh. This is
the birthplace of Ambedkar and thousands of Dalits congregate here on
April 14 every year to celebrate his birthday.

The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has written to the Prime Minister
saying he is ready to provide an alternative land free of cost to the
army and that construction work at this place should be stopped.
