Dalit boy cracks IIT entrance test

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 17:53 IST

Patna: The socio-economic deprivation did not come in the way of
realising his cherished dream as a bright youth from the Mahadalit
communities Anand Kishore, a native of Nawada district, did himself
and his family proud by cracking the prestigious joint entrance test
of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

The son of a father engaged in tapping palm juice for livelihood, the
18 year-old boy lived up to the expectation of his guru Anand Kumar,
the mathematics wizard and founder of the prestigious coaching
institute, 'Super 30' to secure 1190th position in the joint entrance
test for IIT this year.

Basking in the glory of his newly found achievement, Kishore, who
studied upto Class XII from a non-descript school in Nawada district,
passed on the credit of his success to the Super 30 and its co-founder
Kumar.

"I studies in a dedicated and disciplined manner on the advice of
Kumar Sir," he said.

My family members too stood like a rock by my side and prayed for my
success, Kishore, who belongs to the Pasi caste of the larger social
conglomerate called Mahadalit, said.

IIT-JEE: Dalit students come out with flying colours

Staff Reporter

Naresh from Government Junior College at New Nagole secures 210th rank
in SC category

Five other students from the Government Junior College secure ranks in
the IIT-JEE entrance

The Government Junior College offers two-year long-term integrated
coaching for Dalit students

HYDERABAD: If getting admission into the Indian Institute of
Technology is a dream for many, it is a dream forbidden for many more
due to social and economic exclusion.

A. Naresh, a student from the Government Junior College at New Nagole
designated by the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential
Educational Institutions Society for IIT long term coaching, had all
the debilitating circumstances that would have consigned him to those
millions.

He did not succumb, and he is in news.

Owes it to parents

Naresh, who secured the rank 210 in the SC category of IIT-JEE, is the
first such candidate from his village Kasimpalli of Warangal district.

He owes it as much to his parents-- Sulochana, a municipal sweeper and
Ilaiah, an agricultural labourer-- as to his own dogged effort to
scale the impossible heights.

"My parents are keen on our education. They did not want us to end up
in menial jobs like them," said Naresh who stayed and studied in the
social welfare hostels all through.

He was one among the six students from the college who smashed through
the air of despondency pervading their Dalit identity to secure ranks
in the entrance.

The others

The other students are B. Ranjit Kumar, M. Maruthi, M. Gangadhar, V.
Murahari, and K. Jagan. "This college was set up in 1998 on special
request from IIT trainer Chukka Ramaiah who felt the need for offering
IIT coaching to Dalit students. It is the only one of its kind in the
whole country. Last year too, we could send four students to the IIT,"
said the Government Junior College Principal E. Lakshmaiah.

Rigorous training

The college offers two years' long term integrated residential
coaching for Dalit students chosen through an entrance exam.

Rigorous training from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and model tests prepare them
to compete with the students from the elite corporate colleges across
the country, the Principal said.

"Sixteen students got selected for the NIT last year. 98 per cent of
our students leave the institute with engineering college admission
letters," says Seetharama Sastry, a proud mathematics lecturer from
the college.

[ZESTCaste] Writing a legacy

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Writing-a-legacy/624151

Writing a legacy

The Indian Express Posted online: Thu May 27 2010, 23:04 hrs
Between 1947 and 1964, then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru wrote
hundreds of letters to state chief ministers. The letters are
collected in a bulky five-volume series and aim at more than
information exchange — after all, Nehru's chief ministers were
inevitably from the Congress, and intra-party mechanisms existed to do
the real talking. No, the letters were about protocol; Nehru's
enduring belief that governing institutions were separate from
personalities and parties. His letters also aimed to involve the
states in a national conversation, which explains the foreign policy
thrust in many of his letters. After Nehru's death, the practice
reduced to a trickle. One suspects the decline had less to do with
phones — and later, email — and more with the erosion in the sanctity
and independence of these executive offices that Nehru held so dear.
What to make, then, of the 100-odd letters that Uttar Pradesh Chief
Minister Mayawati has sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh since she
assumed power in May 2007? The comparisons to that earlier era are
striking. Her letters range from the warp and weft of political spin
(why isn't caste included in the 2011 census?) to global concerns
(piracy off the coast in Somalia). The format is quaintly formal,
addressed to "Dear Prime Minister" from "Respectfully, Mayawati". Many
of the letters are personally written, from a leader not exactly known
for such touches. But more than anything else, it is the frequency —
about one every 11 days — that evokes Nehruvian comparisons.

Unlike Nehru though, Mayawati is no writer; her autobiography, for
example, is cliché-ridden and polemical. Which is what makes these
glimpses of her thought so much the more valuable. This generation
lives with a historical record not rich in Dalit empowerment; as a BSP
acolyte has remarked, the letters will stand as a "historic record"
for "future generations". Much like the statues built for a similar
purpose, but with little burden to the state exchequer.

Affirmative action a must: PM
Agencies Posted: May 27, 2010 at 0902 hrs

New Delhi The pressure on India Inc is increasing over affirmative
action, a.k.a. reservation or quota, in private sector jobs, with
almost no politician, including PM Manmohan Singh willing to let go of
an opportunity where they can bring up the subject.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today asked the country's industry
leaders, including Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani, to reach out to the
rural economy and help the government on food security and affirmative
action.

The corporate honchos raised concerns about the possible impact of the
European financial crisis on the Indian economy.

Singh reviewed the state of economy with Tata, Ambani, Azim Premji,
Sunil Bharti Mittal, Swati Piramal, Chanda Kocchar, Deepak Parekh,
Keshub Mahindra and Kiran Majumdar Shaw at the first meeting of the
newly constituted Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry.

The Prime Minister asked them to form sub-groups on food security,
public-private- partnership, backward area development and corporate
social responsibility.
