Mayawati challenges BJP, Congress
Agencies Posted online: Wednesday, Apr 14, 2010 at 1427 hrs

Lucknow : Throwing an open challenge to her detractors, BSP supremo
Mayawati on Wednesday said her party and government would not get
bogged down by the opposition criticism of memorials and parks built
in memory of Dalit leaders.
"The anti-Dalit and anti-Ambedkar mentality of opposition parties can
be seen today in the stiff opposition to the BSP, which follows
Ambedkar's ideology," she said, adding "it was because of this that
the issue of memorials and parks was under severe criticism and was
also dragged to courts."

In her brief address after paying floral tributes to B R Ambedkar on
his 119th birth anniversary, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said,
"Neither the BSP nor my government will bow down even a bit to the
criticism of opposition parties on the memorials and parks set up in
honour of these great men and will leave no stone unturned to provide
them due respect."

Speaking at the sprawling Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Privartan Sthal,
one of the dream projects of her government for which she had faced
flak, Mayawati was critical of successive central governments
specially the Congress for "ignoring" great men belonging to Dalit and
backward castes.

"It was the anti-Dalit mentality which stopped the successive Congress
and BJP governments from giving due respect to these saints and great
men", she said, terming the Congress role as "condemnable".

Stressing that it was the anti-Dalit mentality because of which
Ambedkar was denied Bharat Ratna by the successive central
governments, she said it was only when the BSP entered Parliament for
the first time in 1990 that this "folly" was rectified.

"Had the successive Central governments taken care to give due respect
to the great men belonging to Dalit and backward castes, I would not
have to do so," she said.

The BSP president, who is scheduled to make an aerial survey of the
dharnas being staged by her party all over the state today against
Women's Reservation Bill, said though her party was not against the
measure, it would not serve any purpose without a separate quota for
the Dalit, backward, minorities and poor among the upper castes."

Mayawati said Ambedkar too had similar views on the subject.

BSP leaders and workers gathered at the spot raise d slogans against
those opposing construction of memorials and parks for Dalit leaders.

[ZESTCaste] Maya blasts Congress, others parties for ignoring Ambedkar

Maya blasts Congress, others parties for ignoring Ambedkar

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday said her
government would not budge an inch to the pressure tactics of the
rival political parties over the construction of the Dalit memorials,
parks and statues.

"My government would continue to give due respect to the Dalit icons,"
she said.

On the occasion of the 119-birth anniversary Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar,
Mayawati chose the sprawling Ambedkar Memorial located on the bank of
river Gomti to hit out at the opposition particularly Congress that is
trying to make inroad into her Dalit vote bank.

The national general of Congress Rahul Gandhi as well as the leaders
of BJP and SP had charged the BSP government for spending crore from
public exchequer over the construction of the Dalit memorials, parks
and installation of the statues at Lucknow and NOIDA.

The birth anniversary of Ambedkar had virtually turned into a show of
strength between BSP and Congress in Uttar Pradesh with Rahul Gandhi
launching yatras at Ambedkar Nagar district located 150 km east of
Lucknow to woo the Dalit community.

Mayawati tried to project Congress as anti-Ambedkar. "The Congress
leaders not only ensured the defeat of Ambedkar in the Lok Sabha
election but also put hurdles in Hindu Code Bill that Ambedkar wished
to tabled in the Parlimaent as Union Law Minister," she said.

Replying to Opposition's tirade Mayawati on Wednesday said had
Congress and BJP government constructed memorials of Dalit leaders,
there was no need for her government to construct the parks and
memorials.

"The BSP government is working on the ideals of Bhim Rao Ambedkar and
the memorials are being constructed to honour the Dalit icons," she
said.

Hundreds of BSP workers had started assembling in the premises of the
Ambedkar memorial since early morning. Mayawati accompanied with the
national general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra arrived at 11 am.
After paying floral tribute to the statue of Ambedkar located under
the central dome she said though Congress government remained in power
at Centre for 50 years since independence it did not felicitate
Ambedkar with Bharat Ratna.

"Ambedkar not only played important role in the freedom movement but
also played pivotal role in the drafting of the Constitution. He
raised his voice for the welfare of the oppressed communities.
Congress government continued to ignore him, only when non-Congress
government came in power at the Centre in 1990 and BSP MPs were
elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time, Ambedkar was felicitated
with Bharat Ratna," she added.

Mayawati further said her party was not against the Women Reservation
Bill but wanted reservation for the SC/ST women, religious minorities,
backward class and poor among the upper castes.

"The rein of BSP as well as UP is in the hand of a Dalit woman and I
wish to work for the empowerment of the have-nots especially women,"
she said.

Later Mayawati boarded a chopper and left for the districts of West
Uttar Pradesh to make an aerial survey of the statewide dharna and
demonstration organised by her party in protest against the Women
Reservation Bill.

Forgotten facets

Ranjana-Chaube Posted online: Wednesday, Apr 14, 2010 at 0236 hrs
When Stalin decided to shelve Lenin's democratic dream, he put Lenin's
waxed body into a glass case to prove his own fidelity to Leninism.
Had B. R. Ambedkar been alive today, he would have completed 12
decades of his life. He would be surprised to see the adulation that
surrounds his persona today. Few political leaders have continuously
grown in stature in their afterlife more than Ambedkar.
But he would not be happy to see it. The tragic irony surrounding this
great rationalist scholar is that he has been elevated to the rank of
a god by his followers, who call him a Bodhisattva, an earlier
incarnation of the Buddha. By all indications, Ambedkar was an
atheist. His conversion to Buddhism was an act of revolt against the
caste system defining Hinduism. Remember, Buddhism was an atheist
philosophy in origin. The concept of Bodhisattva was bred by the
Mahayana school of Buddhism that evolved in India sometime after the
Buddha's death and smacks of the Manuvadi incarnation theory. The
Theravadi school prevalent in South-East India does not recognize it.

Some Dalit leaders have further Hinduised Ambedkar by calling him
"Babasaheb". This has saved them the embarrassment of going the whole
hog with Ambedkar. It is not clear whether Ms Mayawati or her mentor,
Kanshi Ram, adopted Buddhism. It is not clear whether a declaration to
that effect would gel with the overwhelmingly Hindu electorate they
are courting.

The other thing that Ambedkar may have been embarrassed with would be
the rampant Congress-flogging that is Mayawati's pastime. It is true
that Ambedkar, in his late life, was disgusted with the Congress. But
that disgust was essentially on the general plane of the Congress's
failure to ameliorate the condition of the Dalits; and, on the
specific question of the Congress failure to steer the Hindu Code Bill
drafted by him through the Provisional Parliament.

Ambedkar's difference with the Congress was purely on principles. He
was a responsivist like many other politicians including M.R. Jayakar
and Tej Bahadur Sapru. In the election to the Constituent Assembly of
India in 1946 he was the only candidate of his party, the Scheduled
Caste Federation (SCF), from the Legislative Assembly of Bengal. In
that Assembly alone, in all British India, did the SCF have a member —
and just one member. Had the Dalits had a separate electorate, like
the Muslims and the Sikhs, there would certainly have been more SCF
members in the provincial assemblies. It speaks of the nobility of
Ambedkar's character that, he surrendered this privilege in 1932 in
order to induce Gandhi to end a fast.

According to the requirement of proportional representation a
candidate in Bengal would require three-and-a-half votes of MLAs. The
SCF made an electoral pact with the Communist Party of India (CPI)
that had three seats in the Assembly, for the second preference votes
each of which had half the value of one vote. The second preference
vote of SCF saw the CPI candidate, Somnath Lahiri, through. The three
second preference votes of the CPI made for one and a half votes. It
appears that two other second-preference votes were supplied by the
Muslim League. After Partition the SCF member, Jogendra Nath Mondal,
moved to East Bengal and joined the Muslim League-led government
there.

After Partition, Ambedkar and the CPI member of the Constituent
Assembly lost their seats. This was payback time for the Congress.
From the province of Bombay, M.R. Jayakar resigned from the
Constituent Assembly because of some disagreement with the Congress
and, particularly, with Sardar Patel. The Congress, which had been
keen on building the widest consensus around the Constitution,
nominated Ambedkar to that vacancy. He won and subsequently was made
chairman of the Drafting Committee.

He did his job well. On the final day of the work of the Constituent
Assembly he expressed his profound happiness with the cooperation of
the Congress.
