Dalit house burning case: NCSC asks Odisha authorities to submit enquiry report

Bhubaneswar: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has
asked the Bolangir district authorities in Odisha to submit the
enquiry report within February 7 on the burning of 30 dalit houses at
Lathore village last month, official sources said.

In a letter issued by its Kolkata office, the NCSC asked the Bolangir
district magistrate and the superintendent of police to conduct an
 inquiry into the matter.

The instruction was given in response to a petition filed by Haladhar
Sethi, the president of Orissa State Scheduled Caste-Scheduled Tribe
 Youth & Student Council.

"The commission also sought an action taken report in the dalit house
 burning case," Sethi said.

A group of upper caste people had allegedly set fire to the houses of
Ganda dalits at Lathore village under Khaprakhol police station area
on January 22 following a clash between the two groups over the theft
of a shirt from a cloth store.

Seeking a status report on the present situation at the affected
village, the panel also wanted to know from the Bolangir district
collector about the monetary and other relief provided to the victims
 after the incident.

The local police had meanwhile arrested 42 persons including two
juveniles belonging to upper-cast Meher community on charge of
torching houses of 38 dalit persons.

The government has sanctioned Rs 1 lakh from the Chief Minister's
Relief Fund each to the families who lost their houses in the clash.
