SP to tone down opposition to Maya's split plan

New Delhi: A day after Mulayam Singh Yadav threatened stir over
Mayawati's plan for UP's division, Samajwadi Party is wary of any
over-the-top reaction which would turn it into an election issue and
hand BSP a crucial advantage.
SP members were part of the din on the first-day of Parliament's
winter session, seemingly to protest the resolution passed by voice
vote in the state assembly. It appeared a natural reaction to the
party chief's announcement to assert "one state" policy in all forum.
But there may not be much of a protest in future if the rethink in the
party is any indication. A strong section feels that high-decibel
opposition to UP's division will only turn it into an issue, serving
the BSP's objective. Chief minister Mayawati stumped the opposition by
espousing the cause of dividing UP into four states ahead of polls,
inserting a new issue in the campaign debate limited to corruption and
governance.
The announcement's shock value was evident in Congress scrambling to
find a middle-of-the-road response like state reorganization
commission while SP found itself stranded and forced to oppose it.
Samajwadis, however, are rethinking the option of going the whole hog
on the division issue. "Why make it an issue unnecessarily," an MP
said.
A senior leader explained that SP's Parliament protest was not about
division of the state but against misgovernance and BSP government
lacking majority. "So, we were asking for dismissal of the government.
It was not just about the split plan," he clarified.
The caution in Mulayam's flock follows Congress's decision to play
down the issue as a "poll gimmick" without going into its merits. The
party thinks its purpose will be best served by sticking to BSP's
performance in power and not falling into the trap laid out by
Mayawati's 'split the state' plan. It is felt that the CM's
announcement after nearly five years in power made the "gimmick"
charge convincing.
There may not be much noise from the BSP camp too. In a strange move,
Mayawati has gagged her MPs from talking about her surprise gambit.
The MPs have been asked to stay quiet because the media was already
talking about it. The party supremo feels that people discussing the
issue would carry more credibility than party legislators and MPs
publicizing it.
