1 more held for defiling statues
TNN | Jan 30, 2012, 04.32AM IST

HYDERABAD: Police on Sunday announced that they had nabbed another
youth in connection with the desecration of Ambedkar statues in
Amalapuram even as serious doubt is being raised over whether three
youths who have been already arrested in the case were at all the
actual culprits.

Gandham Pallamraju is the latest to be taken into custody in the
statue-desecration case, revealed senior police officials.

Rajendranath, inspector general of police, said 13 persons have so far
been found to be involved in the incident.

Police on Saturday presented three youths before the media and said
they had desecrated the statues in Amalapuram on January 23.
Curiously, the youth - Vakapalli Durga Babu, Kanchipalli Anji Babu and
Manduri Anil, all in their 20s - said they had been very drunk on that
night and, therefore, had no idea as to what they had done in that
state.

HYDERABAD, January 30, 2012
OUJAC calls for bandh today
Staff Reporter

RTC bus set ablaze at Ramanthapur

Pro-Telangana organisations and parties have given Telangana bandh
call on Monday protesting the desecration of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's
statues in different parts of the State.

Members of Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OUJAC) met TRS
president K. Chandrasekhar Rao and sought his party's support for the
bandh. A round-table conference with leaders of various organisations
and political parties was also organised on Sunday to seek their
support. All the splinter groups of OUJAC's have expressed their
support to the bandh.
Mild tension

Meanwhile, mild tension prevailed at Doordarshan (DD) office in
Ramanthapur on Sunday night when unidentified persons torched an
APSRTC bus protesting desecration of Ambedkar's statues. Carrying
sticks and petrol bottles, miscreants stopped route number 113E bus
from ESI to Uppal and asked passengers to get down immediately.

Miscreants assaulted a passenger Anwar and bus driver D. Sudhakar for
trying to resist them. They then damaged the windscreen and torched
the bus. Police said OUJAC students might have scaled the university
compound wall abutting the DD office and carried out their operation.

A fire tender was rushed to the spot and doused the flames. Irate
students damaged a truck parked near the office of Hyderabad
Metropolitan Development Authority at Tarnaka and escaped from the
spot. Special police pickets were posted on the premises of OU and
surroundings to prevent any untoward incidents.

Rajahmundry (AP), Jan 29 (PTI) Gandham Pallam Raju, the main accused
in the desecration of statues of B R Ambedkar in East Godavari, today
surrendderd here even as police foiled attempts by dalit leaders to
stage protest against the incidents and arrested scores of people from
the community. Gandham Pallam Raju, allegedly involved in the
desecration of the statues, surrendered before the district police
here, police said. Raju was also wanted in connection with a case
pertaining to the attack on Tollywood actor Rajasekhar and his wife
Jeevitha while they were shooting in Amlapuram division around six
months back among other cases. A manhunt has been launched to nab the
eight other accused who are believed to have been involved in defiling
the statues, police said. With the arrest of Raju, the number of
persons arrested in connection with the incident has gone up to four.
Meanwhile, the attempt of dalit leaders and members of the community
to hold demonstrations and rasta-rokos in protest against the arrest
of their leaders was foiled by police. Jupudi Prabahkar Rao,
Gollapalli Surya Rao, Bojja Tharakam and K Nirmala Kumari were among
others who were arrested by police near Buddha Bhavan Vihar here when
they were heading towards Amlapuram in East Godavari district to
attend the meeting organised in the backdrop of defiling of the five
figures of the dalit icon on January 23. Condemning the arrest of V
Durga Babu (20), K Anji Babu (19) and M Anil (19) yesterday in
connection with the desecration incident, the dalit leaders today
alleged the police had targeted innocent persons. "We are organising
the meeting to discuss the reasons for desecration of the statues and
not for other things," they said. According to police, the accused
arrested in connection with defiling the statues have said that they
committed the act under the influence of alcohol. Security has been
beefed up in the district following arrest of the dalit leaders. In a
related development, MLC K Durgesh today launched an indefinite fast
in Rajahmundry demanding arrest of the "real" culprits.

Hands and legs of a dalit youth severed in MP
PTI | 07:01 PM,Jan 29,2012

Rajgarh (MP), Jan 29 (PTI) In a shocking incident, three persons
allegedly chopped off both hands and legs of a 27-year-old dalit youth
at Pagari Bangla village under Malawar police station limits in
Rajgarh district, apparently over a petty issue, police said today.
The victim, identified as Jagdish, has been referred to Bhopal for
treatment and was in a serious condition, they said. The incident took
place yesterday morning when the accused, identified as Arjun Thakur,
Shiva Gurjar and Madan, attacked Jagdish with an axe and a sharp-edged
weapon since he had complained to police against them for allegedly
stealing an electricity meter from his agriculture field. Harbouring a
grudge against Jagdish for approaching police, the three attacked him,
police said, adding a case has been registered against the accused
though no arrest has been made so far. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh
Congress Committee president Kantilal Bhuria has strongly condemned
the incident saying the state administration has become "defunct" as
the chief minister remains occupied with political "dramatics". He
also demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and has also sought Rs
5,000 as a life-time monthly assistance for the victim. PTI COR MAS
