Rajahmundry (AP), Jan 26 (PTI) Unidentified persons desecrated a
statue of Indian Constitution's architect B R Ambedkar at Dowleswaram
here, police said. The desecration, which took place at a road
junction, sparked tension in Dowleswaram and forces have been rushed
to the area to maintain peace, they said. Further details are awaited.
Dalit leaders, who visited the town, were angry over the incident.
"It's a grave insult to Ambedkar. The incident has occurred on a day

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati plays caste card ahead of Uttarakhand polls

Mayawati plays caste card ahead of Uttarakhand polls
ANI Posted online: Wed Jan 25 2012, 17:51 hrs
Rudrapur : Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief
Minister Mayawati has urged the people of Uttarakhand to elect a party
that is focussed on the needs of the lower castes.

Addressing a rally here on Tuesday, Mayawati said that all political
parties, including the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
had failed to tap the needs of minorities in the country.

"It is sad to see that after all these years of independence, the
economic condition of the poor and downtrodden people of society,
especially those of lower castes including scheduled castes, scheduled
tribes, other backward classes and even the minorities like Sikhs,
Muslims, Christians has not seen much improvement," Mayawati added.

Raising the issue of rising inflation in the country, she said her
party had repeatedly asked the Congress party to focus on the needs of
the many rather than some industrial power houses.

Due to the incompetent economic policies of the government inflation
in the country has risen to new levels that has put a heavy burden on
the poor and middle classes all over the country, including
Uttarakhand. In this regard, our party has repeatedly urged the
federal government to adopt the economic policy that would provide
growth to the people of this country, rather than some selected
industrialists," Mayawati added.

Political mercury is at a high in poll-bound Uttarakhand state, where
the main fight is between the current incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party
and the Congress Party.

Polling for the Uttarakhand legislative assembly would be held on January 30.

[ZESTCaste] Lampoon on Mayawati not allowed to be staged

Lampoon on Mayawati not allowed to be staged

FP Politics Jan 25, 2012

The Lucknow administration has denied permission to stage a play in
the city later this evening as the authorities found the script to be
a lampoon on Chief Minister Mayawati.

Uttar Pradesh CM. PTI

Going through the script before granting permission to stage the play,
the administration realised that the central character of the play,
Maya, had too many similarities with Chief Minister Mayawati.

Maya, the princess in the play, has a fascination for expensive
sandals, elephants and money.

Fearing that the play may end up upsetting the Bahujan Samaj Party
cadres as well as snowball into a huge political controversy in the
poll-bound state, the administration decided against the staging of
the play.

[ZESTCaste] UP assembly election: Opposition parties grab tainted BSP leaders

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics/nation/up-assembly-election-opposition-parties-grab-tainted-bsp-leaders/articleshow/11628853.cms

25 Jan, 2012, 04.12PM IST, Ashish Tripathi,TNN
UP assembly election: Opposition parties grab tainted BSP leaders

LUCKNOW: UP chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati's `waste' is
turning out be `asset' for the Opposition parties. The ministers and
MLAs sacked by her on charges of corruption and involvement in
criminal activities are getting tickets from other parties for the
upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Latest in the series is
Rajpal Tygai who has been fielded by Samajwadi Party from Muradnagar
assembly seat in Ghaziabad.

Rajpal Tyagi was dropped by Mayawati from her cabinet last month after
high court ordered a CBI probe into a fake encounter case. Rajpal
Tyagi has been accused of influencing police to kill his rival
Ravindra Tyagi in a fake encounter last year. However, SP on Wednesday
replaced Dikshant Tyagi, who was earlier given ticket from Muradnagar,
with Rajpal Tygai. The SP leaders said that the high court has only
ordered an inquiry against Rajpal Tyagi. He has not been found guilty
as yet, they said. Significantly, earlier, two MLAs -- Guddu Pandit
and Sher Bahadur Singh -- expelled by Mayawati on charges of
involvement in criminal activities were also given tickets by the SP.

SP is not the only party to grab expelled BSP MLAs and ministers. BJP
has given tickets to two former ministers in Mayawati government --
Daddan Mishra and Awdhesh Kumar Verma -- for the elections. The two
were sacked by Mayawati on charges of corruption and neglecting their
constituencies. BJP had also inducted former family welfare minister
in Mayawati cabinet, Babu Singh Kushwaha, who is the prime suspect in
the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam.

Mayawati had removed and later expelled Kushwaha after allegations of
his involvement in the NRHM scam surfaced. The BJP was forced to
suspend the membership of Kushwaha after some senior leaders opposed
his induction. However, Kushwaha is campaigning for BJP for the
elections to be held in February.

RLD has also given tickets for elections to three tainted BSP MLAs --
Thakur Yashpal Singh, Haji Yakub Quereshi and Shanawaz Rana. While
Yashpal Singh was expelled by Mayawati on corruption charges, Quereshi
was axed for his alleged derogatory remarks of the Sikh community, and
Rana for trying to protect his nephew accused of kidnapping and raping
two Delhi-based girls.

[ZESTCaste] Statue defiling: Bandh total in Amalapuram

http://www.thehansindia.info/News/Article.asp?category=1&subCategory=2&ContentId=34951

Statue defiling: Bandh total in Amalapuram

Culprits will be caught in 48 hrs: Minister Viswaroop
Amalapuram: The bandh called on Tuesday in protest against desecration
of the statues of Dr Ambedkar in Konaseema was total and peaceful.
People protested in a peaceful way. Rasta rokos were observed at many
places in the district and there was no untoward incident in the
district.

Though the people of Konaseema are eager to find out the culprits
behind this dastardly incident, they maintained a remarkable
restraint. The streets in Konaseema wore deserted look as the shops
and other institutions were shut. Buses and auto rickshaws did not ply
during the day; bus services resumed in the evening.

The roads were empty as thousands of people who visit Amalapuram
everyday from surrounding villages did not come out of their houses.

The police department kept a strict vigil in Konaseema. Armed forces
that were brought from other districts are patrolling the sensitive
areas of the region. The district machinery had a sigh of relief as
the bandh passed off peacefully. Even the youth decided to stay
indoors as the Section 144 was imposed.

Speaking to The Hans India, the Minister for Animal Husbandry Pinepe
Viswaroop, said: "It seems that the desecration of Ambedkar statues is
a very well-orchestrated act as destroying four statues in four
different places on the same day cannot be done easily... I am very
happy that no major incident has taken place in Konaseema after such a
shameful act.

The present situation is not a conflict between two castes and people
from all communities are insisting that the culprits be brought to
justice. We will arrest the perpetrators within 48 hours." East
Godavari district collector M Ravi Chandra told The Hans India: "This
incident has brought a bad name to the wonderful Konaseema area and
the people behind this act would not be spared."

The government appointed Additional DG Krishnam Raju as the special
officer to investigate this case. He reviewed the situation with the
Coastal Andhra IG Rajendranath Reddy, Eluru range DIG Suryaprakasa
Rao, East Godavari district SP Trivikram Verma and other officials.

Speaking to reporters, Krishnam Raju said, "The situation is under
control and bandobast would continue for some more time. The
investigation is going on and the Section 144 would continue."
