Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said all steps
were being taken to ensure that people belonging to scheduled caste
and tribe were not subjected to any atrocity.

"We are firm in our resolve to rein in atrocities on SC/ST people. We
have taken all steps to ensure that they do not face any atrocity,"
Kumar told a meeting held to review state-wide vigil and monitoring of
cases under Prevention of SC/ST Atrocity Act here.

"If a matter is reported, police should take immediate and effective
steps so that a speedy trial is possible for the conviction of the
perpetrators," he said.

He asked the officials of Revenue and Land Reform department to
effectively review distribution of government land to the SC/ST
beneficiaries and ensure that no no injustice was done.

Stating that there was proposal to set up one SC/ST police station in
every district by the end of current fiscal, he said now ten such
police stations were in operation.

MADURAI: Velammal Institutions Chairman MV Muthuramalingam has
returned the custody of the land usurped� from a Dalit woman here.�
According to police, a case was slapped against Muthuramalingam and
his accomplices, personal assistant Thirupathi Venkatesan and
contractor Vijay Anand for usurping the land worth Rs 1.5 crore from
one Samayal of Anupanadi. The land sprawling across 1.43 acres was in
proximus to Velammal Village near Anupanadi. The accused in the case
had bought over 60 acres engulfing the land belonging to the Dalit
woman and had been exerting pressure on her to sell off it for a
paltry sum.

Dalit woman shot dead when she resisted molestation bid

MAINPURI (UP): A Dalit woman was on Saturday shot dead by three
persons in Ghiror area when she resisted an alleged molestation
attempt by them, police sources said here.

Sunita Balmiki (37) was shot dead this afternoon by Dalbir Singh
Chauhan his brothers Omvir Singh and Harbir Singh at Raimza village
when she was working in the field, they said.

Sunita's husband Chotey Lal in his FIR alleged Dalbir and his brothers
attempted to molest her but shot her dead when Sunita resisted and
raised an alarm, police said.

After Muslims, UP chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati has demanded
reservations in government jobs and educational institutes for poor
upper castes on financial grounds.
LUCKNOW: After Muslims, UP chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati has
demanded reservations in government jobs and educational institutes
for poor upper castes on financial grounds.

She wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard on
Sunday. Mayawati has requested prime minister to put the provision of
reservation on financial grounds in the Ninth Schedule of the
Constitution so that it cannot be challenged in any court of law.

She said that reservation is necessary to help masses living below
poverty line, irrespective of their caste and class, join national
mainstream and contribute in country's development.

Significantly, Mayawati had written a similar letter to prime minister
on Saturday asking for constitutional amendment to provide quota to
Muslims. For this, she was criticised by the BJP and Congress from
trying to appease muslims.

While BJP said that Maya's demand will strengthen divisive forces in
the country, Congress had accused her of doing nothing for the welfare
of Muslims.

The letter shot off on Sunday is being seen as Mayawati's attempt to
strike balance in her 'Sarvjan vote bank', which comprises dalits,
muslims, brahmins and most backward classes.

Mayawati, in her letter, has also written that she is reiterating the
demand of quota for upper castes on financial grounds.

The CM had raised the issue earlier in 2007 soon after coming to power
in UP. It might be mentioned here that Maya had successfully wooed a
section of brahmins in 2007 assembly election by demanding 10% quota
for upper castes on financial grounds. In 2009 Lok Sabha elections,
she had promised to implement upper caste quota if voted to power.

Clash erupts over land dispute, Dalit dies

Gonda: A Dalit was beaten to death allegedly by his relatives over
some land dispute in Nawabganj area here, a senior police officer said
on Saturday.

Santram, who received serious injuries when two groups of Dalits
clashed on September 12, died yesterday, said SP J Ravinder Gaur.

Santram's wife alleged he died after was assaulted by his relatives
and policemen.

The SP said a case of culpable homicide had been registered against
Santram's relatives.

He said if involvement of any policeman was found during
investigations, action would be taken against him.
