"…at a recent institutional investors' conference which I was
addressing on contemporary Indian politics.

"Just a little bit disconcerted by how many questions were being
asked on the "curse" of caste-based reservations, I did something
wicked. This was a crowd of nearly 500 of the best paid, globalised
Indian finance whiz-kids, in hundred-dollar Hermes ties, seven-figure
(in dollars) bonuses and fancy cars.

"'We have here, fellow Indians with the finest jobs in the world,
mostly with an IIT/ IIM education. Both institutions have also had
caste-based reservations for ever. So how many of you here are tribal
or Dalit?'

"Not a single hand came up.

"Sensing a QED moment, I turned the knife. 'Okay, please tell me
how many of you at least count a Dalit or a tribal among your friends
or acquaintances? Or how many of you have even shaken hands with a
tribal or a Dalit?'

"Not a single hand came up again."

Dalit woman shot dead

Ghaziabad, June 25 (PTI) A Dalit woman was allegedly shot dead by some
unidentified assailants near Dhudheshwar temple here, police said.

35-year-old Dhanesh Kumari, wife of Ravi Dutt Jatav, was going on a
motorbike last evening when she was shot dead by some unidentified
armed men, Police Superintendent (city) J K Sahi said.

She was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her brought dead, he said.

Police suspect that Kumari was killed over a property dispute.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a man died of stab wounds in a
hospital in Meerut, police said today.

Asheesh (22), was stabbed to death Thursday evening in Modinagar when
he and his father Jai Prakash tried to intervene in a scuffle between
their house owner Daya Chand and his two sons, police said.

On hearing a commotion, Asheesh and his father rushed to prevent Daya
Chand''s sons from beating him up over a property dispute, however,
Chand''s sons stabbed them seriously injuring Asheesh.

He was rushed to a hospital in Meerut where he died last evening, police said.

Police have registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against
the sons of the house owner.

Both the assailants are absconding.

Weird twists and turns in politics

Growing up in one of the most humble bastis in Mumbai taught me
several things. Rajkaran gajkaran hai (politics is a disease) was a
favourite saying in our neighbourhood, which was totally dominated by
the Shiv Sena. Two of my less-educated friends always threw this line
at me and I never understood it.

But today, as one reads reports about how Gopinath Munde is upset with
his party, the BJP, about Dalit leader Ramdas Athavale hugging the
Shiv Sena after the Congress 'denied' him a share of power; and about
the Sena's claims that it 'never' opposed the renaming of Marathwada
University after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, I believe what my friends used
to tell me.

It is true that public memory is short, but individual memory need not
be. For instance, Munde claims he has been sidelined in the state BJP
(after the sudden elevation of his rival Nitin Gadkari as national
president), but scores of other veteran BJP leaders had felt the same
way when Munde was catapulted to the top by the late Vasantrao
Bhagwat. When he was in full flight, Munde too had trodden on many
toes, just as he complains is happening to him now.

His plight is similar to the battle between Rajendra Shekhawat
(husband of president Pratibha Patil) and former Congress minister
Sunil Deshmukh in Amravati. Deshmukh for 20 years ruled the roost in
the Amravati region; Shekhavat could do nothing. But his fortunes
changed once Patil became president, forcing Deshmukh to mellow down.
Shekhavat had made a classic statement: "It's a cycle. Did we utter a
word (when things weren't going our way)?"

Athavale's hugging the Sena, which had strongly opposed the renaming
of Marathwada varsity, is a similar joke. Of course, the irony is hard
to miss: the very Sena that changed Bombay to Mumbai to underline its
Marathi roots and pride had asked Dalits what they were going to
attain by renaming Marathwada varsity after Dr Ambedkar. The Dalit
pride theory didn't wash then.

Athavale and quite a few Dalits are looking at the new alliance in the
hope that it will deliver power to them, and they shouldn't be blamed.
The Congress leadership always used Athavale and his followers as a
strategic vote bank; now the Congress will have to earn the support of
the Dalits and the new alignments will make everyone assess their
strengths.

Last, but not the least. It is quite farcical to see how the forces
are realigned. Rewind to 1996. Over a dozen Dalit protesters were
killed in police firing at Ramabai Nagar in Ghatkopar. Munde, as the
home minister in the Sena-BJP government, had stoutly defended the
firing. The then leader of the opposition Chhagan Bhujbal (who has
been accused of washing clean the Hutatma Chowk following a fierce
Dalit agitation in the '80s while he was still in the Sena) tore into
Munde and the Sena-BJP government. And Athavale, who claims to
represent the entire Dalit community, had to run for his life after
angry Dalits chased him away while on a visit to Ramabai Nagar.

Like my friends said, rajkaran gajkaran hai.

Incidents of sexual assault continue to haunt Uttar Pradesh, with two
fresh cases of alleged rape reported on Saturday. The first rape was
reported from Faizabad district, while the other from Bahraich
district. The victims in both the cases are teenagers. In Faizabad's

"The girl Friday lodged a police compliant following which we arrested
the two men, who are in their mid 20s,'' police inspector Vidya Sagar
told IANS on Saturday.

"The girl has alleged she was threatened with dire consequences if she
approached police. Further investigations are underway. The medical
report of the girl is still awaited," he said.

In the second case, a 17 year old girl was on Friday allegedly raped
by an owner of a photo studio in Fakharpur town in Bahraich. "The
accused is still absconding. We have registered an FIR against him.
The girl has been sent for medical tests. Their reports are awaited,''
police inspector Brijesh Kumar Yadav told IANS.

In the last fortnight, around a dozen cases of sexual assault and rape
have been reported from various districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Puri, Jun 25: Caste discrimination that still prevails across the
country has reached its height when the chairman of the National
Commission for Schedule Castes was denied entry at a temple in Puri.

PL Punia, a Dalit himself is considered as 'untouchable'who was
allowed just till the compound, but found the main temple doors shut.
The MP said that he would take up the matter.

"I will summon the Chief Secretary of Orissa within 15 days and seek
explanation from him over the matter. After that I will take action
against this illegal practice which is very much within the
jurisdiction of my commission," Punia said.

The Kali temple has restricted the entries of the dalits since 80
years. But, the controversy, 2010 when three school girls dared to
cross the boundary to offer prayers raised protests regarding this
issue. They were dragged out by higher caste villagers and insulted,
which led to a series of violent clashes.

The Dalits who are basically sharecroppers were denied cultivation
from the upper cast land owners. "Now that we are also denied
cultivation, we have not much to eat. We will be forced to leave the
village and migrate as labourers," said a Dalit farmer.

Though such casteism practises are illegal, due to lack of political
will, the age old mentality these still continue.
