Mayawati: why no Dalit on Lokpal panel?

Playing the Dalit card, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on
Friday criticised the Centre, the Congress and civil society for not
including any SC member in the Jan Lokpal Bill drafting committee.

At a hurriedly convened press conference here, Ms. Mayawati invoked
Dr. Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and his contribution to the
socio-economic uplift of the downtrodden sections to drive home her
point. Even after 63 years of independence, was not a single SC member
found suitable to be on the drafting panel?

The panel comprises Anna Hazare, Santosh Hegde, Arvind Kejriwal,
Shanti Bhushan, Prashant Bhushan (civil society members) and Union
Ministers Pranab Mukherjee, P. Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, M. Veerappa
Moily and Salman Khursheed (from the government side).

In a pointed reference to Gandhian Anna Hazare, Ms. Mayawati said he
came from a State, which has had a history of struggle for the
socio-economic development of the SCs and the STs. Dr. Ambedkar was
also from Maharashtra. "Mr. Hazare should have considered these
aspects before naming the civil society members."

The "mistake" should be rectified by including an SC member from a
non-political background.

Referring to the controversy surrounding the Bhushans but without
naming them, Ms. Mayawati suggested that the panel distance itself
from members whose integrity was in doubt.

LUCKNOW: A day after pledging support to Anna Hazare in fight against
corruption, UP chief minister Mayawati on Friday attacked the social
activist and Congress-led UPA government for not including any
scheduled caste member in joint committee for drafting Jan Lokpal
Bill. She demanded that the committee should be reconstituted and
include a non-political scheduled caste member.

Without naming anybody, the UP chief minister also said that the
committee should distance itself from those whose integrity is
doubted. Maya's attack has come at a time when the joint committee is
facing crisis. Committee's co-chairperson and senior Supreme Court
advocate Shanti Bhushan and his lawyer son Prashant Bhushan, who is
also a member of the committee, are under pressure to quit in the wake
of CD and land deal controversies.

Significantly, the BSP had on Thursday announced support for Anna and
accused Congress leaders of levelling unnecessary allegations against
his team members.

Addressing media persons, Mayawati said that none of the members, five
each nominated by Hazare and UPA government, are from scheduled caste
category. She said that Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar was a dalit and was
found to be the most suitable person to draft the Indian Constitution.
Hence, she said, she could not understand why the UPA government and
the civil society members did not provide representation to the
scheduled castes in the joint drafting committee.

Maya attacked Congress by accusing it of castist mentality. "Congress
party talks about dalits but does not involve them in important
decision making process," she said. In the same vein, she targeted
Anna saying "Anna belongs to Maharashtra, the birth place of
Babasaheb. Maharashtra is also a place from where many social reform
movements originated in the country. How can he forget to include a
scheduled caste member in the committee," she said.

Maya said that she cannot buy the argument that civil society members
led by Hazare and the UPA government could not find any suitable
scheduled cast person who could be part of the joint committee for
drafting the Jan Lokpal Bill.

She said that now the Central government should rectify the mistake
committed by the civil society members by including a non-political
dalit member. For this, she added, the drafting committee should be
reconstituted at the earliest.

Bhushans should quit Lokpal drafting panel: Mayawati
LUCKNOW: Wading into the raging controversy involving the Lokpal Bill
drafting committee members, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati
today virtually demanded resignation of the Bhushans .

"The committee should distance itself from those whose integrity is
doubted," she said, without naming anyone in the wake of the CD
controversy involving lawyer Shanti Bhushan and property allotments to
him.

Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant are both members of the 10-member committee.

At a press conference, she also demanded inclusion of an "apolitical
scheduled caste member" in the committee.

"Of the 10 members including those of civil society, there is not
member of scheduled caste in the drafting committee. We want the
committee to be re-organised and an apolitical scheduled caste member
included in it," she said.

Alleging that Congress forgot to include an SC member in the committee
"due to its casteist mentality", Mayawati said the party has ignored
the caste on important occasions.

She said Anna Hazare should have discussed before giving names of
drafting committee members.

"How could he forget to include the name of an SC member in the
committee when Maharashtra, the state to which he belongs, has
witnessed a number of social agitations for giving rights to the
community?" she asked.

She also said that Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar also belonged to Hazare's state.

Welcoming Hazare's anti-corruption agitation, she said BSP has been
fighting corruption and criminalisation and was determined to root
them out from the society.

"The evil of corruption and criminalisation has become chronic in the
state due to previous governments. BSP will root them out but it will
take time," she added.

Kolkata, Apr 21 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today
expressed concern over criminalisation in politics, flow of black
money and extended solidarity with the movement of social activist
Anna Hazare against corruption."Large-scale corruption and flow of
black money in the country is a matter of concern. Anna Hazare rightly
raised his voice against this. We are always against corruption," she
told an election meeting here for party candidates.She claimed
corruption and criminalisation in politics has reached its peak during
the rule of Congress, BJP and SP in Uttar Pradesh.The menace was
contained to a great extent soon after BSP came to power, Mayawati
said."I came in power for four times in the state. I don't take the
help of the corporate or capitalists or black money.I run my party
with the help of subscriptions from my supporters," she said.Mayawati
also criticised the economic policy of the Congress-led UPA government
saying that it was serving the interest of the capitalists.Holding the
UPA government responsible for all the hurdles faced by the Dalits,
SC, ST, OBC and other minorities, Mayawati said that the Centre had
failed to take concrete steps to improve the standard of lives of
these sections of the population.

BANGALORE: The High Court on Thursday directed the Karnataka State
Commission for SC and STs to furnish details of the meetings conducted
by the commission in the past three years before the court.

The division bench consisting of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice
A S Bopanna directed the commission to furnish the details of the
meetings, including names of participating members, dates on which
meetings were held, topics discussed and decisions taken in such
meetings within four weeks.

A PIL was filed in the high court requesting the court to direct the
government to replace the commission's chairman, Nehru Olekar, as he
has not attended even a single meeting of the commission since his
appointment.
