MUMBAI: Around 5,000 Dalits, dressed in dapper suits, gathered at the
Khar Gymkhana ground to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr
Babasaheb Ambedkar on Thursday. The organizers wanted the participants
to emulate the bespectacled scholar-statesman, who always wore a blue
suit.

"We wanted to convey the message that we are qualified in our chosen
fields. Hence, the dress code was a must," said Sundip More, a Dalit
from Bandra.

"The intention behind organizing this event was to educate youngsters
so that they can venture into various professions," said Kiran Sakpal,
a Dalit businessman.

He added, "We decided to celebrate this occasion on a grand scale at
Khar Gymkhana as many accomplished youngsters from the community
weren't comfortable with the idea of commemorating it on the street.
When it comes to festivals, there is no mention of this auspicious
day. While we visit a friend's home for Ganpati, we are unable to
invite them on Ambedkar Jayanti."

Sangharaj Roopvate and former deputy police commissioner Vanzari were
some of the accomplished Dalits who created awareness among the youth
at the event.

Lucknow : Allocates Rs 60 cr for lawyers' welfare and Rs 500 cr for
construction of HC building

On the occasion of Dr B R Ambedkar's 120th birth anniversary on
Thursday, Chief Minister Mayawati announced her government's decisions
to sanction funds worth about Rs 60 crore for the welfare of the state
lawyers and Rs 500 crore for a new building of Lucknow Bench of
Allahabad High Court. Besides, an additional fund of Rs 50 crore would
be given for the purpose of providing library facilities for judges
and to meet their other requirements in consultation with the Chief
Justice.

Addressing a gathering on the premises of Dr B R Ambedkar Samajik
Parivartan Sthal, Mayawati said her government has left behind other
governments, including Central governments, in honouring Baba Saheb.
"Baba Saheb was an expert on law. I was impressed by him and have done
law graduation also," she told the gathering.

In February, lawyers were lathicharged by the police when they had
tried to march towards the Chief Minister's residence to handover her
a memorandum demanding allocation of funds in the state budget for
their welfare schemes. The state's main Opposition Samajwadi Party
(SP) had tried to make it an issue by claiming the previous Mulayam
Singh government had allocated funds for lawyers' welfare schemes.

Mayawati claimed the previous government had tried to mislead the
lawyers by making announcement for funds without making budgetary
allocation for the same.

She said the state government has decided to provide Rs 60 crore to
the board of trustees meant for lawyers. The funds would be used for
the welfare schemes like insurance protection, pension for the widows
of lawyers, library facilities and construction of their chambers.

Regarding Rs 500 crore fund for construction of a new building of
Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High court, she said it is the state's
share and added the Centre has so far not given its share for the
purpose.

In another development, the CM also announced the decision to engage
government lawyers for fighting the cases filed by BPL families and
cases of those who are covered under the Uttar Pradesh Mukhya Mantri
Mahamaya Arthik Garib Yojana.

She clarified the beneficiaries would get such benefits only in those
cases in which the state government is not an opposite party. The
government lawyers would not charge any fee for this.

On the occasion, the CM also highlighted the contribution made by Baba
Saheb in the empowerment of the weaker section of the society by
making special provisions for them in the Indian Constitution.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today paid rich
tributes to Dr B R Ambedkar saying that he converted the idea of
social justice into reality through constitutional provisions.

This, Chavan said, was Ambedkar's biggest contribution to
strengthening the Parliamentary democracy in the country.

Addressing Congress workers during a function to mark the 120th birth
anniversary of the father of Constitution, the Chief Minister said
Indian constitution had provisions for amendments because of which
several laws could be implemented to bring the deprived and neglected
sections of the society into the national mainstream.

"It was because of the Constitution that Indian democracy is thriving
unlike in other countries where democracy never took shape," he said.

According to Chavan, through reservations like the 50 per cent quota
for women in local bodies, the deprived and neglected sections get
political empowerment. However, economic empowerment cannot come
through legislations, "we all know that even though there are laws for
social justice, implementation faces a lot of hurdles," he added.

Chavan said the government has decided to undertake a programme
beginning from today to fill in the backlog of the backward class
recruitment in government service. "Over the years, due to ban on
recruitment in government service, the backlog of reservations had
accumulated," he noted.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre said
the party has decided to observe the coming year as "social justice
year" at the village, taluka, district and state level.

"Party workers and leaders are expected to organise various programmes
for uplift of backward classes, handicapped, women and other deprived
and neglected sections of the society we have to make sure that these
sections feel that Congress is with them through our actions," he
said.

VARANASI: Rich tributes were paid to Dr B R Ambedkar on the occasion
of his 120th birth anniversary on Thursday.

To commemorate the contributions of Ambedkar, a grand function was
organised at Ambedkar Park, Kutchehri.

After offering floral tributes to Ambedkar, divisional commissioner A
K Upadhyaya highlighted how Ambedkar maintained balance during the
process of drafting of the constitution of India. He said that the
role played by Ambedkar was instrumental in maintaining unity in a
democratic structure.

He said that Ambedkar was a messiah for the deprived section of the
society and he also struggled for the unity, equality and harmony in
the society. "He called upon the government servants to improve their
work culture and also to show determination in solving the problems of
people belonging to weaker sections on priority," Upadhyaya said.

Speaking on the occasion, district magistrate Ravindra said that there
is a need to ensure proper participation of people belonging to weaker
sections of the society in the politics apart from strengthening their
social and economic status.

He said that the philosophy and teachings of Ambedkar are still
relevant in the 21st century.

Other speakers also threw light on the life and contributions of
Ambedkar on this occasion.

Professor C R Yadav, R S Singh, R S Tripathi, Jaya Aryan and chief
development officer Sharad Kumar Singh also addressed the gathering.

Rajkot, Apr 14 (PTI) A mob protested violently after a statue of Dr
Babasaheb Ambedkar in Morbi road area of the city was vandalied by
unknown miscreants this afternoon, police said. After the incident
came to light, some locals started throwing stones in protest. Senior
police officials including Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mayanksinh
Chavda, rushed to the spot. Police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed
two teargas shells, they said. The situation is now under control.
