Thiruvananthapuram: Pulling on its own in Kerala's bipolar polity
dominated by the LDF and the UDF, the BJP is in touch with some of the
Dalit and Backward Class outfits to boost its electoral prospects in
the state.

"We are holding talks with some of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled
Tribes organisations. We will be supporting their candidates in some
of the assembly segments", BJP state president V Muraleedharan told a
meet-the-press here.

Similarly, the party was also holding talks with some organisations
representing backward class communities like 'Dheevara Sabha", he
said.

Asked why the BJP is shying away from seeking support of bigger
community outfits like SNDP Yogam and NSS, he said these organisations
had made it clear that they would be keeping equal distance from all
political alliances.

He, however, said that the BJP had excellent relationship with both
SNDP and NSS.

The BJP, which as so far not won any assembly seat in Kerala, is
highly confident of opening its account this time, he said.

"We will be projecting ourselves as the real Opposition in the state,
which is ruled by the LDF and the UDF alternately. The two coalitions
are responsible for all the stunted growth of the state. The presence
of the BJP in the assembly as a corrective force is inevitable", he
said.

Apart from development issues and failure of the two main fronts,
other main issues to be raised by the party during the campaign would
be terrorism, problems of internal security and law order collapse, he
said.

LUCKNOW: State Bahujan Samaj Party president Swami Prasad Maurya has
termed the statement made by Samajwadi Party leader Shiv Pal Singh
Yadav regarding programmes being organised on the birth anniversary of
late BSP leader Kanshiram as 'mischievous'. He said that Yadav's
statement proved his anti-dalit mindset.

Yadav, in a statement has assailed the BSP government for wasting
public money in organising programmes on the birth anniversary
celebrations of late Kanshiram.

Maurya said that the people have not yet forgotten the scams, which
made headlines in the national media during the SP's regime. Foodgrain
scam, police recruitment scam, Ayurved scam, Noida scam and and LDA
scam in which the SP leaders has swindled crores of rupees were still
fresh in the people's mind.

Cell for students grievances remains on paper

ALLAHABAD: It was in 2007 that the Allahabad University had proposed
setting up of a special cell for addressing the grievances of the
SC/ST students. Though some of the members were appointed, the cell is
yet to have an office or become functional, even after almost four
years.

The so-called SC/ST cell of AU is headed by Dr Satya Narayan of
department of botany, who is assisted by deputy registrar A K Kanojia
and assistant registrar Nurul Hooda. After the initial appointment of
three members, the AU expected that UGC would be providing the
required infrastructure for setting up of the cell. "As per the UGC
regulation, the cell should have a separate office and an official, of
the rank of deputy registrar, should be heading the said cell. But
although the cell has been made functional on papers, nothing has been
done to recruit the official or to provide an office for the same,''
said one of the members of the cell, A K Kanojia, who is also the PRO
of AU.

Preparing as an Independent Researcher for a National Convention on Bonded labour, Migrant labor, Construction Workers and Domestic Workers organised by the National Campaign Committee for Construction Labour, Unorganized Workers and Unorganised Workers Federation, I read the 11th five year plan chapter of India on Labour and Employment. I realized that the share of unorganised workers was increasing in the country-with more females being in the unorganised sector.

Both public and private sector were hiring and firing the lower end workers- entering into contracts. They were not protected by labour laws, and not eligible for increments leave, social protection etc. Further, I learnt that land was being acquired by companies on the name of serving public good but creating little secure employment. Worse, some were making money out of technologies that could be used for sex selection of males. Others were keeping people in bondage. Still others had outsourced work to home based workers, where border line is thin between child labour and adult labour. At the pits are venture capital and Initial public offers being used by Non Banking Financing Companies. Are poor women a ground for investment? Why is share of construction to GDP growing leaps and bounds but the growth in wages is minimal?

What is the point of Corporate Social Responsibility if the path of making profits is based on exploiting the labour of poor, women, dalits, adivasis, children and Muslims. I think one should revisit Andre Gunder Frank Theories of Development and underdevelopment - that profits are being made by making poor poorer. Within this paradigm women's work is valued the least.

Let us move towards Just Corporatship- abide by labour laws, see ways of enabling poor to benefit out of growth in services and industries and STOP appopriating agriculture land, coasts, forests which belong to the poor. IF THIS PATH IS FOLLOWED, THERE WILL BE NO LABOURERS LEFT FOR MANUAL WORK. AND CORPORATES WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE PRICE
