[ZESTCaste] Several Dalits to embrace Buddhism tomorrow

http://www.hindu.com/2010/10/13/stories/2010101360540300.htm

Karnataka - Gulbarga

Several Dalits to embrace Buddhism tomorrow

Special Correspondent

It will mark 54th anniversary of a similar act by Ambedkar

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Several monks will grace the occasion

'Following the tenets of Buddhism is essential'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GULBARGA: A large number of Dalits will embrace Buddhism here on
Thursday to mark the 54th anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar embracing
Buddhism at Nagpur in Maharashtra along with his followers.

Veteran Dalit leader Shivaram Moga told presspersons here on Tuesday
that the International Bouddha Yuva Sanghatane and the Buddhist
Society of India would jointly organise the fifth mass 'Buddha Dhamma
Deeksha' programme at the MSK Mill Grounds here on Thursday.

Mr. Moga said that October 14 was an important date in the annals of
India as it was on this day that Ambedkar had embraced Buddhism in
protest against the oppressive caste system that prevailed in the
country.

Buddhism gave a new life to those who embraced it at the behest of
Ambedkar. "This was also the day on which Buddhism was revived in the
country in which it was born," he said.

Achievement

The Buddhist Society of India and the International Bouddha Yuva
Sanghatane have been celebrating the anniversary of Ambedkar embracing
Buddhism in Gulbarga for four years. "So far, thousands of Dalits and
oppressed sections of society have embraced Buddhism," he said.

Adopt philosophy

Admitting that mere embracing of Buddhism would not bring about any
qualitative change in the life of Dalits, he said that it was
essential to adopt the philosophy and follow its tenets. Led by Bhante
Bodhidhamma, founder president of the International Bouddha
Sanghatane, a team of Buddhist monks from across the country will help
the Dalits in the conversion process.

Inauguration

The programme will be inaugurated by Union Labour and Employment
Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge. Dalit leaders, including Mogali
Ganesh, D.S. Veeraiah, Mavalli Shankar and Vittal Doddamani, will
participate, Mr. Mogasaid.

Dalits seek privilege in statute

KATHMANDU: National Dalit Commission (NDC) today urged Prime Minister
Madhav Kumar Nepal to incorporate Dalits' agendas in the upcoming
constitution as a privilege to compensate for centuries of
discrimination.

After studying the thematic committee reports of the Constituent
Assembly on the issues of Dalits rights, NDC submitted an evaluation
report to the prime minister at his office today.

"The upcoming constitution should admit that the centuries-old social
inequality and injustice in the constitution was a mistake of the
past. So there should be compensation by providing Dalits additional
privilege for their empowerment," reads an excerpt of the report.

The three-member NDC committee had prepared the report, which includes
an extensive study of the thematic reports of the 10 CA committees.

Narayan Nepal Pariyar, member of the report making committee, said
some Dalit issues were good but many others needed to be incorporated
in the statute, otherwise, the Dalit community would again fall prey
to injustice, discrimination, and exclusion.

"The constitution should incorporate the issues of Dalits in the
federal structure of the state, since Dalits do have majority in
populations," he said.

NDC Chairman Jivan Pariyar said the country's first code made
one-and-half century ago discriminated Dalit communities. He added
that mere equal opportunity could not be just. Therefore, extra
privilege was needed.

[ZESTCaste] Bravehearts: Reclusive duo Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna talk about fighting honour killings in Aakrosh

Bravehearts: Reclusive duo Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna talk about
fighting honour killings in Aakrosh

Neither of them is a talker but both Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna
find themselves completing each other's sentences at the Screen
Preview for their forthcoming film Aakrosh at Express Towers along
with producer Kumar Mangat Pathak. "The film uses the recent spate of
controversial honour killings in North India as the background for a
typical Bollywood action-drama," says Devgn who, fresh from the
success of Raajneeti and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, is now hoping
for a hat-trick. Khanna, who will be seen on the big screen after a
year's gap, is quick to add, "The story has been fictionalised and we
have taken precautions to not name any town or caste in particular."
The film sees Devgn play an army officer and Khanna, a CBI officer,
both sent to a small town to investigate a missing person case which
they eventually discover is a murder.

Directed by veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan, the concept for the film
was instantly approved by Mangat who has himself witnessed one such
killing in his Punjab village. "A Brahmin girl married her lower caste
lover on the sly. On discovering this, her parents kidnapped her and
were marrying her off to someone else when the boy arrived at the
wedding. He was set on fire and thrashed just to set an example. Even
just recalling it gives me the chills," he recounts.

Though a deep-seated issue, neither actor was apprehensive of
portraying the roles of heroes who raise their heads against the
killings. Nor are they afraid of possible controversies that the story
may stir. "It's ridiculous that being a nation that gives us freedom
of speech, movies are often targeted," Devgn points out. "But some
films also make use of negative publicity," says Khanna adding after a
pause, "and Shah Rukh Khan knows that very well."

Khanna, clearly in his trademark candid mood, also took digs at the
recent hit Dabangg while talking about Aakrosh's action quotient.
Devgn, who feels that old-fashioned hand-to-hand fights still work for
Indian audiences, says that the duo will be seen bashing up two dozen
men but convincingly, to which Khanna retorts, "Unlike Da-bangg!".
