Congress president Sonia Gandhi has written to Haryana Chief Minister
Bhupinder Singh Hooda, expressing anguish over a Dalit father and
daughter being burnt alive in the State.

'Cannot be allowed'

She described the incident as a "matter of shame." Party sources said
Ms. Gandhi asked for "firm and severe" action against the perpetrators
and said such incidents "cannot be allowed to happen."

She said it was "totally unacceptable" that the incident happened in
the presence of a naib tehsildar and a police officer.

Ms. Gandhi also asked the Chief Minister to pay "personal and urgent
attention" to protect the Dalits from further violence and take
measures to bring perpetrators to justice and ameliorate the
sufferings of those who have borne the brunt of the attacks.

A Dalit man and his daughter were burnt alive at Mirchpur in Hissar
district on April 21. Congress general-secretary Rahul Gandhi visited
the village on Thursday.

[ZESTCaste] Modi’s anti-Dalit remarks stall RS

Modi's anti-Dalit remarks stall RS

Agencies Posted online: Friday , Apr 30, 2010 at 1253 hrs
New Delhi : In an unusual move, members from the ruling Congress today
trooped into the well of Rajya Sabha and forced its adjournment,
agitated over not being allowed to raise the reported remarks by
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi about Dalits.
Senior Congress member Praveen Rashtrapal got up and wanted to raise
the issue during Zero Hour but was denied permission by Deputy
Chairman K Rahman Khan, who said the notice has not been admitted by
the Chairman.

Joined by Congress members J D Seelam, Alka Balram Kshatriya, Ishwar
Singh, M A Khan and others, agitated Rashtrapal stormed the well
insisting he be allowed to raise the matter.

Rashtrapal was heard saying Modi has "humiliated" Dalits and B R
Ambedkar. Sensing the mood of the treasury benches, Khan adjourned the
House for 15 minutes.

During that brief period, Congress members were seen discussing with
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prithviraj Chavan. They
also went to the Chairman's office.

When the House resumed and Khan called P Rajeev (CPI-M) for his Zero
Hour mention on corruption charges in the Home Ministry, Rashtrapal
was at it again.

As he and his party colleagues started marching towards the well,
Deputy Chairman adjourned the House for the second time till 2 PM.

Later talking to reporters outside the House, Rashtrpal said he has
been denied the opportunity to raise the matter despite repeated
attempts.

"The entire world knows about Modi. In his statement while releasing a
book 'Samajik Samrasta' on April 26, he had said Ambedkar was not a
revolutionary.... Modi also compared Dalits to mentally retarded
children," he said, adding he would raise the issue again on Monday.

Dalits all set to become priests

TTD's programme aimed at checking religious conversions

The TTD has so far trained 500 non-Brahmins in 'idol worship'

The programme is aimed at popularising sanatana Hindu dharma

Welcome change:Participants at the training programme conducted for
Dalits by the TTD in Tirupati on Tuesday.

TIRUPATI: After successfully conducting training programmes in
'priesthood' to Girijans (Scheduled Tribes) and Matsyakaras
(fishermen), the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has now turned
its eye to yet another socially-deprived section, the Dalits.

Third batch

By strengthening the 'weak spiritual links' of the sections hitherto
uncared for, the TTD seeks to propagate 'Hindu tattva' among the
oppressed sections and wean them away from religious conversions. The
third batch of training classes in 'Idol worship' for members of the
Dalit community started at the Sri Venkateswara Employees Training
Academy (SVETA) premises, the TTD's training and development arm, here
on Tuesday.

Joint Executive Officer N. Yuvaraj, who inaugurated the programme,
addressed the trainees on the TTD's endeavour to draw the
socially-neglected sections back into the fold of spiritualism. He
exhorted them to focus not only on the religious aspects they were
learning, but also on social etiquette and a healthy living style, so
as to lead a life free of vices.

Objective

"The objective is to popularise and spread Sanatana Hindu Dharma and
inspire the weaker sections to become partners in its propagation",
Dr. Yuvaraj noted, appealing to the participants to take proper care
of the folk temples in their vicinity and involve the local community
in spreading the message of devotion.

SVETA Director Bhuman S.Reddy said that the number of non-Brahmin
'Archakas' trained by the TTD thus far was close to 500.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit girl burnt alive in Haryana village

Dalit girl burnt alive in Haryana village

A physically challenged girl was burnt alive and her father received
serious burn injuries when some persons set afire houses belonging to
dalits in a village in Haryana's Hisar district on Wednesday.

Eighteen-year-old Suman was charred to death while her father Tara
Chand, 70, suffered 90 per cent burns, official sources said adding
the incident happened in Mirchpur village.

Members of a particular community raided the village and set afire
some 12 to 15 dalit houses, they said.

Old enmity between the two communities coupled with flaring up of the
tension in the past few days led to today's incident, the sources
said.

A few days back, some members of a community allegedly passed some
objectionable remarks on dalit women.

This provoked retaliation from the dalits who roughed up some youths
of the rival community, villagers said.

A physically challenged girl was burnt alive when some persons set on
fire dalit houses, Hisar Deputy Commissioner OP Sheron said.

Asked how many houses were torched, he said "we are yet to get full details."

He said a case under various sections of the IPC had been registered
against some persons and promised strict action against the guilty.

A large posse of policemen were deployed in the village where tension ran high.
