Nation pays homage to Ambedkar on his 119th birth anniversary
Posted on April 14th, 2010 in Latest India News

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): The nation on Wednesday paid rich tribute to
Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, architect of India constitution, on his 119th
birth anniversary.

President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress
President Sonia Gandhi were present at a function held here.

Several functions are being organised in different parts of the
country to mark the occasion.

Dr. Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, scholar, Bahujan political leader
and a Buddhist revivalist.

He spent his life fighting untouchability and the Indian caste system.

He is also credited for having sparked off the Dalit Buddhist movement
and was honoured with the Bharat Ratna for his contribution to Indian
society.

Overcoming numerous social and financial obstacles, Ambedkar became
one of the first "untouchables" to obtain a college education in
India.

He went on to pursue higher studies in the United States and England,
where he earned law degrees and multiple doctorates for his study and
research in law, economics and political science.

Returning home as a famous scholar, Ambedkar practiced law for a few
years before he began publishing journals that advocated political
rights and social freedom for India''s untouchables.

[ZESTCaste] Rahul to pay tribute to Ambedkar pic not statue in Mayawati land

Rahul to pay tribute to Ambedkar pic not statue in Mayawati land
Bombay News.Net
Wednesday 14th April, 2010 (IANS)

Denied permission to garland a statue of B.R. Ambedkar in this town
named after him, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi has opted to
offer floral tributes to a picture of the architect of the
constitution on his birth anniversary here Wednesday.

Local Congress workers have hastily mobilised a large portrait of
Ambedkar, which has been placed prominently at the venue of a party
rally to be addressed by Gandhi on the occasion that also coincides
with the leader flagging off 'yatras' on the Congress' 125 years.

The Congress and Uttar Pradesh's ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have
been at loggerheads ever since Gandhi declared his plans to kick off
the Congress' 125th anniversary campaign in Ambedkarnagar, widely
known as BSP supremo and chief minister Mayawati's bastion.

'As Rahul-ji was coming all the way to Ambedkarnagar on an occasion
like Babasaheb's birth anniversary, it was natural for him to garland
his statue here, but the administration has created so many hurdles
that Rahul Gandhi would now garland Babasaheb's portrait,' said
spokesperson of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Subodh Srivastava.

Officials in the administration deny allegations that they hastily got
down to finding ways and means to prevent Gandhi from garlanding
Ambedkar's statue in the town.

'No permission was sought by the Congress party for garlanding the
Ambedkar statue so where is the question of denial of permission,'
said an official.

Srivastava retorted: 'Well, I do not think we need to take the
government's permission to garland the statue of a revered national
leader - that too on his birth anniversary.'

As the war of words continued, the administration placed a heavy
security ring around the statue, preventing anyone from venturing into
the cordoned off area.

'The security is there only to prevent any untoward incident and in
the larger interest of law and order,' Ambedkarnagar District
Magistrate Vikram Singh told IANS.

Tensions between the Congress and the BSP, which reveres Ambedkar as
an icon, have been continuing for a while.

The administration had earlier refused Gandhi access to a particular
ground for his rally, compelling him to settle for another venue in
the neighbourhood. That ground was formally 'reserved' for a similar
show by the BSP.

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati challenges BJP, Congress

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Mayawati-unfazed-by-opposition-to-Dalit-memorials/606289

Mayawati challenges BJP, Congress
Agencies Posted online: Wednesday, Apr 14, 2010 at 1427 hrs

Lucknow : Throwing an open challenge to her detractors, BSP supremo
Mayawati on Wednesday said her party and government would not get
bogged down by the opposition criticism of memorials and parks built
in memory of Dalit leaders.
"The anti-Dalit and anti-Ambedkar mentality of opposition parties can
be seen today in the stiff opposition to the BSP, which follows
Ambedkar's ideology," she said, adding "it was because of this that
the issue of memorials and parks was under severe criticism and was
also dragged to courts."

In her brief address after paying floral tributes to B R Ambedkar on
his 119th birth anniversary, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said,
"Neither the BSP nor my government will bow down even a bit to the
criticism of opposition parties on the memorials and parks set up in
honour of these great men and will leave no stone unturned to provide
them due respect."

Speaking at the sprawling Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Privartan Sthal,
one of the dream projects of her government for which she had faced
flak, Mayawati was critical of successive central governments
specially the Congress for "ignoring" great men belonging to Dalit and
backward castes.

"It was the anti-Dalit mentality which stopped the successive Congress
and BJP governments from giving due respect to these saints and great
men", she said, terming the Congress role as "condemnable".

Stressing that it was the anti-Dalit mentality because of which
Ambedkar was denied Bharat Ratna by the successive central
governments, she said it was only when the BSP entered Parliament for
the first time in 1990 that this "folly" was rectified.

"Had the successive Central governments taken care to give due respect
to the great men belonging to Dalit and backward castes, I would not
have to do so," she said.

The BSP president, who is scheduled to make an aerial survey of the
dharnas being staged by her party all over the state today against
Women's Reservation Bill, said though her party was not against the
measure, it would not serve any purpose without a separate quota for
the Dalit, backward, minorities and poor among the upper castes."

Mayawati said Ambedkar too had similar views on the subject.

BSP leaders and workers gathered at the spot raise d slogans against
those opposing construction of memorials and parks for Dalit leaders.

We will continue to set up parks: Mayawati

14 Apr 2010, 0031 hrs IST,IANS

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government will continue to set up parks
and memorials in the names of Dalit icons despite the criticism by
political
opponents of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party, Chief Minister Mayawati
suggested Wednesday.

"We have been constructing parks and memorials in the names of
important Dalit and OBC (Other Backward Classes) personalities just to
give due respect to them," she said while addressing a gathering on
the occasion of birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar.
