BSP or Business Samaj Party? Kanshi Ram 'friends' want Maya out

New Delhi In a dark, spacious room at the Gandhi Peace Foundation in
New Delhi, a ragtag team of a dozen-odd men passed a resolution on
Tuesday — to remove Mayawati as president of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
It is time to reclaim the party from her clutches, they said, a day
after the BSP expelled the party's general secretary Shahid Siddiqui
for speaking against the party chief.
These men, mostly well into their sixties, and all former BSP members,
have gathered under the loftily-named banner of the All India Leaders,
Functionaries and Activists. And all of them were very close to the
BSP's founding father Kanshi Ram, they claimed.

But do they have a plan of action? The resolution should do for now,
said Manohar Atey. "We have also written to the Election Commission."
Atey described himself as a founder general secretary of the BSP, and
also of the Backward and Minority Communities Employees' Federation
(BAMCEF) — a group founded by Kanshi Ram. While Newsline was unable to
establish the veracity of his claims, Election Commission records show
he contested an election in 1996 on a BSP ticket from Peddapalli in
Andhra Pradesh. He got 3,466 votes — 0.5 per cent of the vote bank.

The group held their 'all-India meeting' on Tuesday where invitees
were requested to bring 'five to ten enlightened individuals' to
participate in the debate. Former BSP member from Bengal, K K Roy
said: "Whenever Kanshi Ram came to the state, he would visit me and we
would together plan the BSP's future. Mayawati took advantage of
Kanshi Ram's illness and declared herself the president even though
Kanshi Ram had repeatedly said a central committee should be set up
after his death to elect the party president."

K S Minayya, who claims he was once the party's president in Andhra
Pradesh, exhorted the twenty-odd present to "join the revolution". "It
should no longer be called the Bahujan Samaj Party because she has
joined forces with Brahmins. It should be renamed the Business Samaj
Party, because having money has become the most important criteria for
membership," he said.

The discussion then veered towards reorganising the BSP's structure
after Mayawati's 'removal'. Atey suggested it have a politburo, along
the lines of the Left, so that 'no one person can have absolute
power'.

But Roy had a question — shouldn't this group first become a political
party? Suggestions about the name were bandied about: Bahujan Social
Welfare Party, People's Power Federation, Bahujan Samaj Sangh, Bahujan
Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) — until Minayya wanted to know why they
should create a new party when the ultimate aim was to reorganise the
BSP after Mayawati's removal?

Roy disagreed, and after much deliberation, a committee was set up to
come up with a name. The group intends to reconvene once the Election
Commission responds to their plea for Mayawati's removal - they are
sure there will be a response.

Now speaking about Mission 2012, BSP has still
not lost touch with its voters. Hence Ku. Mayawati will not only be the first
Scheduled Caste Prime Minister of Jambddvipa, that is, the Great Prabuddha
Bharath, but also rise to be the first Pacific Prime Minister.

Politics and
political matters are considered worldly concerns, yes. But Mayawati did not
ignore such worldly concerns, because as a Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh,
still she is living in society. Food comes from vast numbers of people
constituting society. So she is working to elevate society to evolve into a
higher form, to be more effective and more just?

The Ministers, MLAs and BSP Cadres are also told by Mayawati
to work for the good of many, for the benefit of all beings and for the
betterment of society. The intent behind the founding of the Bahujan Samaj
Party (BSP) was entirely for the benefit of the people.

In the life of Buddha, we find that the Buddha often
discussed politics with the rulers of realms in his time, such as King Mala,
King Kosala, King Licchavi and King Ajatasattu. The Buddha always preached the
kings that they must rule their kingdoms with dasarajadhamma. The dasarajadamma
in Pali is based on ten precepts, in order for the king to best rule the
country. They are:

(1) be liberal and avoid selfishness,

(2) maintain a high moral character,

(3) Be prepared to sacrifice one's own pleasure for the
well-being of the subjects,

(4) be honest and maintain absolute integrity,

(5) Be kind and gentle,

(6) lead a simple life for the subjects to emulate,

(7) Be free from hatred of any kind,

(8) exercise non-violence,

(9) Practice patience, and

(10) Respect public opinion to promote peace and harmony.

Ms Mayawati's government who wishes to peacefully rule her
State effectively apply these 10 precepts even today; they haven't yet and
never will "go out of date."

She follows
non-violence and peace as a universal message. She did not approve of violence
or the destruction of life, and aware that there is no such thing as a 'just'
war. "The victor breeds hatred; the
defeated lives in misery. He who renounces both victory and defeat is happy and
peaceful."

She is also
aware 'When the ruler of a country is just and good, the ministers become just
and good; when the ministers are just and good, the higher officials become
just and good; when the higher officials are just and good, the rank and file
become just and good; when the rank and file become just and good, the people
become just and good.'

Now Ms
Mayawati is been described as one of the greatest leaders. The Leader as
Visionary. Like the captain of a ship, he has a definite goal to chart her
course and steer his ship in the right direction. She has one goal - to find
the cause of suffering and a way out of suffering. Despite much hardship and
setback, she never veered from her course but persevered till she gained
awaken-ness after she got elected as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Guided by
this vision, her mission is an all-embracing one. It is a mission founded on
compassion and love for all beings, regardless of race, creed or status quo.

Dalit women more humiliated when raped: Study

NEW DELHI: Dalit women who have suffered caste rapes were subjected to more humiliation than other women similarly assaulted, says a first of its kind research study detailing the psychological trauma of women raped.

When Dalit women are assaulted, offenders use foul language vilifying the woman verbally, says the survey, invariably calling them prostitutes. "The feeling of being dehumanized, of having been demeaned is far greater for Dalit women," says clinical psychologist Rajat Mitra, who led the study conducted by NGO Swanchetan that works with victims of sexual assault. Mitra notes that in any other rape, the victim is not called a 'prostitute'.

Titled 'A research study on sexual assault', it was done through detailed interviews of victims identified by state-level NGOs and government homes as well as by inviting victims to take part in the survey via posters and radio announcements. Of the 122 identified, 66 women agreed to the interview. The questionnaire's themes were identified and built on basis of data collected over the last 10 years and conducted in the last two. The respondents were across 12 states: Delhi, Meghalaya, Assam, Karnataka, Tripura, Maharashtra, UP, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar and Gujarat. Being a first of its kind, interviewers too were thoroughly sensitized to the demands of the survey, says Mitra. Mean and standard deviation for each psychological parameter was calculated; t-test and Duncan's mean test used for comparative analyses.

The comparative study between Dalits and non-Dalits showed that Dalits felt anguish to a greater degree of intensity. They often see rape as "something ordained" by virtue of a double disadvantage: being Dalit and woman. "Whenever a Dalit woman is raped, it gets connected to all other sufferings and discriminations. Dalits being in a disadvantaged position and there's no resilience, no bouncing back," says Mitra.

"The women shared that during the attack, the men seemed to have more pleasure in humiliating their origins and background," adds Mitra. The report details their almost-ritualistic ostracism after the rape where older Dalit women also attempt to explain rape as "tradition".

In a qualitative assessment, the report says girls are almost prepared to expect assault. It says, "Allusions to rape by upper castes begin to appear in subtle conversations and often inflate their anxiety and depressive symptoms that begin to mark (rape) as inevitable in the mind of young Dalit girls." It is extremely important, says Mitra, for a different rehabilitation policy for Dalit women with special training for mental health professionals, judiciary and police sensitizing them to the caste angle.

The Swanchetan study records trauma on two broad themes: 'mehsoos hona' and 'halat' which include parameters of flashbacks, humiliation, hopelessness, shame, betrayal, loss of meaning, dehumanization, feelings of rage and distrust among a host of psychological measures. The severity and frequency of flashbacks ("My mind gets flooded with violent, unusual images that I can't stop") was measurably much greater for Dalit women. In fact, they notched higher trauma levels on every factor studied except for 'despair' and feeling betrayed. This, concludes Mitra, also demonstrates how rape for Dalits, is an inter-generational trauma and not restricted to a one-time event.

The study assumes special significance with the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva mooting that caste-based discrimination be recognized as a human rights violation. "When discriminatory attacks are systematic and avenues for redressal are non-existent or ineffective, certainly caste violence is against human rights. To that end, international condemnation will have an impact in forcing the redressal machinery to work on caste crimes as a priority area," says social scientist Shyam Babu, fellow, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. To that end, such a study proves a guide for action.

Special cell to fight injustice to Dalit women

New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) A special cell to address the issues faced by
Dalit women is being set up by the National Commission for Women (NCW)
in an effort to fight injustice against this section of society, Women
and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said Tuesday.
"Welfare of Dalit women needs special attention as they have been
discriminated against by other sections of the society for long.
Though many programmes have been drafted by various ministries, there
is a need to create mass awareness so that these women can come
forward to take advantage of these schemes," she said while
inaugurating the Dalit Women's Congress, "Abhaya Jeevan", in the
capital.

"More short-stay homes and help line services will also be arranged by
the Central Social Welfare Board for the Dalit women. Also, self-help
groups of such women will be provided more funding and training for
capacity building through the Rashtriya Mahila Kosh programme,"
Krishna Tirath added.

The women and child devopment ministry is also conducting a study on
the status of Dalit women so that programmes and policies can be tuned
in accordance to their needs, the minister said.

Addressing the conference, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment
Mukul Wasnik laid stress on education and better health facilities for
Dalit women.

"By March 2010, all manual scavengers will be rehabilitated," he added.
