Stir by Dalits

Staff Reporter

Tuticorin: The Dalits residing at Melapoovani, which is attached to
Karungulam Panchayat Union of Srivaikuntam Taluk, alleged that they
were being subjected to discrimination by the local body
representatives.

They expressed anguish while staging a demonstration in front of the
Collectorate here on Monday. Access to the benefits of welfare schemes
launched by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was hindered.

The panchayat officials had been demanding bribe of Rs.10, 000 for
availing housing facilities under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme, they
alleged. Gas stoves for the poor were also not properly given. More
importantly, the villagers got drinking water only once in a week.

It should be regularised on a daily basis.

The hygiene at the village was poor with lack of basic facilities.
People were also experiencing problems which led to health problem due
to absence of drainage. The sewage was being let into streets, they
protested. Petition to this effect was given to Collector.
