Statue defiling: Bandh total in Amalapuram

Culprits will be caught in 48 hrs: Minister Viswaroop
Amalapuram: The bandh called on Tuesday in protest against desecration
of the statues of Dr Ambedkar in Konaseema was total and peaceful.
People protested in a peaceful way. Rasta rokos were observed at many
places in the district and there was no untoward incident in the
district.

Though the people of Konaseema are eager to find out the culprits
behind this dastardly incident, they maintained a remarkable
restraint. The streets in Konaseema wore deserted look as the shops
and other institutions were shut. Buses and auto rickshaws did not ply
during the day; bus services resumed in the evening.

The roads were empty as thousands of people who visit Amalapuram
everyday from surrounding villages did not come out of their houses.

The police department kept a strict vigil in Konaseema. Armed forces
that were brought from other districts are patrolling the sensitive
areas of the region. The district machinery had a sigh of relief as
the bandh passed off peacefully. Even the youth decided to stay
indoors as the Section 144 was imposed.

Speaking to The Hans India, the Minister for Animal Husbandry Pinepe
Viswaroop, said: "It seems that the desecration of Ambedkar statues is
a very well-orchestrated act as destroying four statues in four
different places on the same day cannot be done easily... I am very
happy that no major incident has taken place in Konaseema after such a
shameful act.

The present situation is not a conflict between two castes and people
from all communities are insisting that the culprits be brought to
justice. We will arrest the perpetrators within 48 hours." East
Godavari district collector M Ravi Chandra told The Hans India: "This
incident has brought a bad name to the wonderful Konaseema area and
the people behind this act would not be spared."

The government appointed Additional DG Krishnam Raju as the special
officer to investigate this case. He reviewed the situation with the
Coastal Andhra IG Rajendranath Reddy, Eluru range DIG Suryaprakasa
Rao, East Godavari district SP Trivikram Verma and other officials.

Speaking to reporters, Krishnam Raju said, "The situation is under
control and bandobast would continue for some more time. The
investigation is going on and the Section 144 would continue."
