RPI to hold protests across Maha over Ambedkar memorial issue

Mumbai, Dec 7 (PTI) The Republican Party of India (RPI) will hold
statewide agitations in support of its demand for allotment of the
India United Mill's land in Central Mumbai for construction of a
national memorial of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. "On December 15, agitation
will be organised from Chaityabhoomi (Mumbai) to Indu mill. The
agitation will also take place in rest of the state. Before the
agitation starts the government should take a decision on it," RPI
chief Ramdas Athavale said today on the sidelines of the party
activists staging a protest outside Maharashtra Chief Minister's
office on the issue. "Since last ten years RPI and the Dalits are
protesting over the issue, however, the government has still not
allotted the land for the memorial," he said. "We did not want to
disturb the chief minister or create any problem for the state
government. Our sole concern is that the Indu mill land should be
allotted for the construction of memorial for Dr Ambedkar," Athavale
said. Accusing the state government of doing precious little in this
regard, the RPI chief said, "the state government says that it has
submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister. But the land belongs to
the National Textile Corporation (NTC) and therefore the NTC and the
prime minister have the rights to allot the land to anybody they
want". The protests came a day after over 800 activists of the
Republican Sena storming the Indu Mill premises in central Mumbai
demanding the mill land be allotted for construction of the memorial
of the Father of Constitution. The activists, led by its leader
Anandraj Ambedkar, even removed the barricades put up near the mill
and installed the busts of Dr Ambedkar and Gautam Buddha inside the
mill premises on his death anniversary yesterday.
