Govt Will Request PM to Hand Over Indu Mill Land: Patil

Maharashtra government today assured the Dalit leaders that it was
willing to construct a memorial of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Indu Mill
land, and would request the Prime Minister to hand the land over for
this.
"MLAs of all the parties have passed a resolution in the assembly that
National Textiles Corporation (NTC) should hand over 12.5 acres of
land at Indu Mills for the construction of a memorial of Dr Ambedkar,"
home minister R R Patil said here.
The NTC should not look at the financial aspect but consider Dalit
sentiments, he said.
Patil, a senior NCP minister, was addressing a public gathering
consisting largely of Dalits.
Patil further appealed that activists of Republican Sena, who have
forced entry into the mill compound since December 6, should leave.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar
would meet the Prime Minister and request him to hand over the land
for the construction of memorial, Patil said.
Nitin Raut, minister for water conservation, also assured the
gathering that he being from the same community, would not let them
down.
Dalit activists had planned a protest march from Dr Ambedkar ground in
Worli to the Indu mill in central Mumbai today, but following an
intervention by Patil and Raut, the march was called off.
