Dalit charges hubby with discrimination
BAGLUNG, MAY 06 -
A woman in Baglung has filed a case against her husband in the
district court charging him and his family with discrimination.
Maya Nepali of Binamare VDC has complained that her husband Arjun
Subedi and his family tried to marry her off to another man just a
week after she was brought to Subedi's house at Narayanisthan VDC as a
bride. She said that after her in-laws disowned her for her Dalit
lineage, her husband tried to arrange her marriage elsewhere against
her will. Nepali had eloped with Subedi in April this year. Nepali's
family had then appealed to the police and different rights groups to
find the whereabouts of the couple.
While investigation was underway, Nepali returned to her parents'
home. She fled after Subedi allegedly tortured her in a hotel room at
Kusma in Parbat district.
Police have detained Subedi, while Nepali is with her parents. Subedi
said he will not accept Nepali as his wife. He claimed that she kept
him in the dark about her being a Dalit during their seven-month-long
love affair. Various Dalit rights groups in Baglung district have
demanded action against Subedi.
