Legal Aid Advised to End Hostility Among Dalit Groups

The Madras High Court Bench here suggested that the Virudhunagar
District Legal Services Authority (LSA) could provide legal aid and
undertake literacy programme in W.Puthupatti in Virudhunagar district
to end the 25-year long hostility between two Dalit communities.
Justices R.Banumathi and S.Nagamuthu, disposing of a PIL petition,
said in the interest of public and in view of serious allegations made
in the affidavit regarding the hostility between Parayar and Pallar
communities, the District LSA could be involved in this matter.
The LSA could co-ordinate with the government officials, including the
Collector, Superintendent of Police and other higher officials, and
look into the grievances...And take effective steps for restoring
cordiality and peace between the two communities.
Petitioner B.Stalin's counsel submitted that there were about 1,000
Pallar families, mostly Christians, and 250 Parayar families, who were
Hindus,in W.Puthupatti.
There had been tension between these two communities for the last 25
years and several persons had been murdered.
The unending hostility was spreading and continuing in the absence of
proper and effective check. The state administration wass not
adequately sensitising the police and revenue officials to handle the
problems in a humane manner. "No positive action has been taken by the
state government so far," the counsel alleged.
