Maid 'commits suicide', relatives suspect foul play

CHENNAI: The relatives of the 20-year-old maid who hanged herself on
Sunday said that they don't believe that she committed suicide.
Nirmala (20), a native of Salaiyanoor near Tiruvannamalai, was working
as a maid in Choolaimedu at the house of a senior executive in a
software company.
Nirmala's father Arumugam is a farmer in Salaiyanoor. "I live with
wife Susheela, four daughters and a son. The deceased is my fifth
daughter. She was working as a maid in the house for the past two
years. The employer called me on Sunday night to inform that she had
committed suicide by hanging at his residence. I rushed to Chennai
after informing my relatives."
S Robert, Chennai region convenor of the Human Rights Forum for Dalit
Liberation said: "The employer has shown a suicide note to the police.
Her relatives say the handwriting doesn't match hers. We staged a
protest in front of the Choolaimedu police station demanding a fair
inquiry."
Choolaimedu police have registered a case under Section 174 (unnatural
death) of the Indian Penal Code. "We have sent the body to the Kilpauk
Medical College Hospital. We will check out the veracity of the
suicide note and are awaiting the report from the forensic
department," a police officer said.
